And it required strange pricing, such as salad bars priced by container instead of weight and produce/meat by the unit. I saw people cheating the system with salad containers overflowing and taking all the meat off the salad bar. But doesn't that same issue persist in stores with the Smart Cart sys...

There was a small-format Whole Foods in downtown Santa Monica (500 Wilshire Blvd.) that closed in 2017. I'm not sure of the square footage; I was in it a long time ago and it was definitely nowhere near a normal-sized WF (or even a 365.)

That store has been there for almost 100 years. It opened as O'Connor Moffat in 1929. Macy's bought them out in 1945 and rebranded the store as Macy's in 1947.

The fact that they're closing their longtime West Coast flagship store in Union Square in SF is a MAJOR indicator of problems. This would almost be equivalent to closing the Herald Square store.
