Re: Bend Sears store closing
Alpha, Eddie Lampert bought up Kmart debt while Kmart was in bankruptcy and was able to influence the bankruptcy process and control the company when it emerged. Subsequently, he used Kmart to buy Sears. There was a massive change in management between the Kmart bankruptcy and the Sears purchase. Th...

Re: Lands End and Auto Centers seperating from Sears?
Conceptually I don't think it's a bad idea, but it's going to be several years (at least) before JC Penney has enough spare cash to take on a project like Sears Canada.

Re: Lands End and Auto Centers seperating from Sears?
They are doing everything they can to wring any possible iota of additional value out of this company. Will investors value Lands End and the auto centers at a higher multiple than if they were part of Sears Holdings? Maybe, but it seems unlikely that it would be by enough to make a major difference...

Re: Bend Sears store closing
As far as I can tell, there once was a Kmart at 63455 N Highway 97 in Bend. I can't figure out which batch of store closings killed it. Based on the lack of information, I would speculate that it was many years ago.

Re: Bend Sears store closing
Corvallis has tight zoning rules that, for the most part, would prevent new big box stores. A new Home Depot snuck in because of an exemption for building supply-type stores. That Walmart Neighborhood Market snuck in because the smaller size for the Neighborhood Market meant that it was fully compli...

Bend Sears store closing
I haven't seen this noted here: the Bend, Oregon, Sears store is closing. http://bendbulletin.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20130925/NEWS01/309250368/0/SEARCH There was a liquidation sale ad in the Bend Bulletin today. This is another sad story that shows just how far Sears has fallen. A store like...

Re: Haggen closing Bellevue and Shoreline Stores
In a world where Fred Meyer supplies stores in Eastern Idaho from the Portland area and where Safeway supplies stores as far east as Bozeman, Montana, from Washington, I don't think that shipping logistics would be the primary reason to close the two Portland-area stores. Maybe a contributing factor...

Re: Haggen closing Bellevue and Shoreline Stores
I don't understand why everyone is so worried about Haggen. Per this press release, the recent store closures position the company for long-term growth: http://www.haggen.com/pressroom/2013/Jul/31/haggen-positions-itself-for-long-term-growth. Closing stores is a good thing. <sarcasm -- just can't ge...

Re: Sears and JCPenney...a couple of troubling observations
I noticed last night at the Grand Teton Mall in Idaho Falls that the Sears store closed at 8 p.m. while the rest of the anchors (JC Penney, Macy's and Dillard's) were open until 9 p.m. and the Barnes & Noble was open even later. This is (I assume) expensive real estate given that the mall has st...
