Re: Wegman's Expanding into Georgia?

This is really a surprise. I though Wegman's was growing into contiguous territory and trying not to stray too far from their distribution centers in Rochester and Pottsville, PA. They're in the Triangle area of NC and I would have though Charlotte would be their next logical extension. I've only be...

Re: Palisades DC Safeway closing

This is a quiet and affluent corner of DC that has been a museum of antique retail. Nearby is the Spring Valley Shopping Center which has housed Jewish market Wagshal's since 1939 and the last DC location of A&P, a 1964 colonial, was tucked away at 48th & Yuma Street and lasted as Superfresh...

Re: Evansville, IN

Right, my memory was a few years off and 1977 was the year that Schnucks-Walgreens opened up in Evansville Brand new Schnucks-Walgreens What I remember most about this store other than it was bigger and more modern than any store in town was the section of generic products with white packaging with ...

Re: Evansville, IN

I can provide some insight into (ancient) history on Evansville, as I spent 9 years of my childhood there from 1973 to 1982. When we moved there Kroger was already gone. There were some A&P stores, Great Scot, Wesselman's and independent Key Market stores (the last two supplied by Creasey Compan...

Re: If you could bring one supermarket chain to your area which one would it be?

Wegmans hands down. There is nothing else like it. Now that they're going into North Carolina maybe they will make it here to Atlanta one day. They'd do really well here. Internationally I like the food stores that M&S operate in the UK and think something like that would do really well in NYC a...

Re: Wegmans (and other modern supermarkets) in malls

Kroger was proposed to take over one level of a large Sears store at the Cumberland Mall in Atlanta to replace their outdated store down the road but the plan was abandoned. This is a mall that has been proactive in reinventing itself as there is a Costco at the other end of the mall (no interior ma...

I do wonder why there aren't at least strong regionals that offer a superior (or at least on par) grocery department with a superior GM departments

Re: Ahold and Delhaize merger closing at the end of the month

Interesting to see Weis going back into markets they had previously abandoned (Virginia and Montgomery County, MD). In the 1990s they used to have locations in the outer N. Va. suburbs (Woodbridge, Centreville, Chantilly and Manassas that I remember) but left the state completely by 2000 or so. The ...

Re: Could we ever see a Publix-HEB merger (or Wegmans)?

Having been in all three I agree they are among the very best in the biz but they're all different. Publix is very limited, in my opinion compared to the other two. They've never attempted to pull off a Central Market type operation (which is comparable to Wegmans or Whole Foods) and are pretty cons...

Re: Publix expanding to Virginia

I agree Publix and Wegmans are apples and oranges. Publix is just a very good regular supermarket chain. Their stores are immaculately clean and their employees are courteous so the shopping experience is really pleasant (to co-opt their catch phrase). It is nicer than the current versions of Giant ...
