Publix is speculated to expand into the District of Columbia in the Washington Business Journal article "Publix making first push into Greater Washington."

Publix is already seeking sites in northern Virginia.

I read somewhere that this could also be an opportunity for Publix to expand in Richmond. I think they are already building one store there from ground up. I'm surprised they're dumping Martin's. Food Lion Stores are low volume garbage. I assume they will be sold cheaply and almost any other banner on the front of the store would cause significant customer count increases. Acquiring The Fresh Market would have moved Kroger into the specialty gourmet grocer segment. As another entity is acquiring The Fresh Market, it remains to be seen if Kroger has interest for additional acquisitions.
