Re: Walmart Stores Losing McDonald's & Add Domino's Pizza & Taco Bell

Basically, this is just Walmart going public about something that's been going on for years.

Re: Pep Boys - out of the parts biz?

Pep Boys is owned by private equity, so the business model is probably built around throwing off a lot of cash---subletting space would make sense in that case. The major problem they have would be who they could get as tenants. Their locations tend to be unflashy suburbs or marginal parts of big re...

Re: Target Closing 2 Small Stores in the San Francisco Bay Area

Super Target and the watered down versions they have in non "Super" stores were forced on them by Wall Street. Much like Walmart and its small stores, they've really not had their heart in it, particularly the "Super" format. The watered down versions actually seem smarter and wo...

Re: Target Closing 2 Small Stores in the San Francisco Bay Area

Pick-up makes it easy to return stuff rather than boxing it up, etc., so it's cheaper for Target and the customer. It's also easier for stuff that's likely to leak, get broken, etc. than shipping. One of the hassles of delivery is theft and clueless Amazon people delivering to the wrong address. And...

Re: Lack of ham this Easter

Stores seemed to cut back on Valentine's Day candy this year, but not Easter. OTOH, the Easter stuff already is being marked down at CVS (which usually does this only with the cheap stuff) and at supermarkets---even Whole Foods.

Re: Target Closing 2 Small Stores in the San Francisco Bay Area

They come in different sizes, some as small as 20K sf. The whole point is to do a "line extension" rather than the expense of launching a new chain and competing against yourself usually fails. I've seen at least one that seems set-up to do a lot of pick-up for online sales. I wouldn't be ...

Re: McDonald's franchisees want a better chicken sandwich

I'm surprised McDonald's hasn't been more successful with chicken. It's a big part of their menu in many places outside the US, particularly where beef isn't very common, which is the case in much of Asia. They compete with local and US-based international chains in those places and even with Chickf...

Re: Circle K divests 350 stores - appears to exit Oklahoma entirely

The Dairy Marts I've seen usually have been old Lawson convenience stores in Ohio with the distinctive brick front design they used in the 60s & 70s. The Lawson name lives on (complete with its old logo) in Japan and now in Hawaii---Consolidated Foods sold the rights to a Japanese firm that like...

Re: Supermarkets giving COVID vaccines in your area

Giant and Safeway have been doing vaccines in DC. They have the space for people to lineup, etc., so they make more sense than CVS and Walgreens. They do ask for insurance info---I'm guessing that whatever contracts they have with health departments assume some income stream from insurance. I've bee...

Re: Krispy Kreme

They seem to do best in the absence of local donut stores that remind people what an actual donut should taste like. They also are popular with tourists. I thought the donuts weren't great years ago when I lived in Nashville and they aren't any better now, basically fried corn syrup and most of the ...
