Re: Stores & Riots
I worked in Baltimore during the 2015 riots. Management told us if looters came in to just drop our tools and leave, don't be brave.

Re: Private label products being sold at other chains
The most common private label mixup I saw at Harris Teeter was 1 pound baby carrots. HEB and President's Choice came to us more often for some reason. Grimmway Farms must really not pay attention to their packing. Also saw bagged salads from Raley's and Walmart, and apples from Trader Joe's. Other ...

Re: Coronavirus Fears and Empty Supermarkets
Harris Teeter was well stocked, but I was surprised to see the salad and hot bars still open. Those things are germ magnets in the best of times, but now I can only imagine what they're carrying. You can tell management in America has never dealt with a true crisis like this. They insist on trying t...

Re: Coronavirus Fears and Empty Supermarkets
The management culture of grocery stores isn't going to help in any capacity. A lot of hourly employees don't health insurance or sick time. Those who do are guilted when they try to call out. Salaried managers will have their jobs threatened if they take too much sick time. I've worked for several ...

Re: Kroger opening distribution center in Maryland
On a whim I did a property records search, and it looks like Kroger owns the warehouse outright now. I was thinking they'd lease in case the project doesn't work out, but they're going all in. https://sdat.dat.maryland.gov/RealProperty/Pages/viewdetails.aspx?County=11&SearchType=ACCT&Distric...

Re: Kroger opening distribution center in Maryland
https://www.bizjournals.com/baltimore/news/2020/01/23/kroger-to-open-high-tech-fulfillment-center-in.html Looks like Kroger will be building an Ocado automated warehouse in Frederick, MD. My question is, will this warehouse service the existing Harris Teeter stores here in Maryland, or be a complet...

Re: PA Stores and strange perimeter layouts
Alcohol laws are full of oddities and stores often don't help. When I lived in Georgia, alcohol could not be sold on Sunday but it was never blocked off. Indiana was a state that required a separate entrance for liquor. Ohio had beer and wine everywhere, but state stores (now replaced with licensee...

Re: Earth Fare going out of business
There's definitely a lesson to be learned on expanding too rapidly too far out of your core area. It seems like these small organic grocery chains only do well by staying in their core metro or region. It's too bad Earth Fare is closing down. They were the first organic grocer I shopped at, back whe...

Re: Kroger opening distribution center in Maryland
Online or brick and mortar, the PA part is what's interesting in terms of where they want to go next and whether it would be H-T or some other banner. H-T is odd, they seem to be investing in DC despite small market shares and stores that rarely seem very busy---there's one in DC that fills up duri...
