Re: Stater Bros. Overtakes Ralphs in Revenue
I've been living in the same San Fernando Valley apartment for 18 years, which means I've been shopping at the same Ralphs for 18 years. It had one total remodel about a year after I moved here (which included expanding into space that was formerly occupied by an independent pharmacy), and since the...

Re: TransformCo (Sears/Kmart) Official Thread 2023: Finally the end?
I go by the Burbank Sears just about every week (I park in the garage next to it to go to the movie theater a couple blocks away), and I've seen zero evidence that anything has been done to the store since the liquidation sale finished and they boarded up/papered over the entrances. I'm thinking of ...

Re: Steak and Shake closing 57 locations
Incidentally, this one actually closed just prior to pandemic lockdowns - it closed sometime during the first half of March.

Re: Cracker Barrel Is Struggling
Cracker Barrel started a delivery-only operation in Hollywood in the fall of 2021, making use of a contracted ghost kitchen ( original press release ), and started a second one in the suburb of Lawndale in March 2022 ( article ), but both appear to have been shut down. The closest "real" C...

Re: Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers To Expand To Canada
Freddy's rated pretty highly in this ranking of fast-food burgers in the L.A. Times last month. I said to myself, "Oh, yeah, I went to that Freddy's in Westlake Village a few years ago... I should go back there." Turns out that location permanently closed in March 2020. Guess I should have...

Re: Now they shoplift right off the train...
One local L.A. website pointed out that Union Pacific laid off a number of employees, including members of their police force, in September 2020. They found a tipster who claimed that UP used to have 50-60 officers who patrolled their tracks in the L.A. area, but that number has been cut to 8. https...

Re: Trouble at Burgerim?
J-Man linked to a follow-up, but the original Restaurant Business article is fascinating, even to someone like me who knows little about the industry (but at least I have enough common sense to know that, um, someone should be collecting a franchise fee from their franchisees). The Burgerim Disaster...

Re: Macy’s To Close Downtown Seattle Store!
Here's a list of known closures of the old flagships. Burdines/Tampa/2018 This should read Miami. Tampa's "hometown" department store was Maas Brothers, and their flagship downtown store closed in 1991, a few months before the Maas Brothers name was retired in favor of Burdines. (Both mov...

Re: Is Chevron consolidating brands?
In general, around here the Texaco brand seems to be used only when there's another Chevron fairly close by, and for some reason also seems to often be used on stations with full service car washes. I know of one intersection in Los Angeles (Beverly & La Brea) where there are Chevrons diagonall...
