Re: Sobeys Buys Canada Safeway
I wonder what will happen. Safeway Canada was very viable and very profitable. Wal Mart and Home Depot seem to do okay in Canada and the Wal Mart Supercenters up there are quite similar to the ones in the US. Loblaws "Real Canadian Superstore" is VERY similar to a Kroger Marketplace in its...

Re: Kroger to buy Roundy's for $800 million
When I was there keep in mind it was more than 3 years ago, I went to the Metro Markets in Brookfield and the one in Downtown (I think it was... had some sort of parking platform). I liked the Downtown store, it was smallish, but well merchandised and seemed high volume and healthy. It could have be...

Re: Save Mart new corporate name
From what I see, Lucky has not been very successful for Save Mart. How many of the "Lucky" stores have closed since the Albertsons purchase (or converted to Food Maxx) vs. how many of the "Save Mart" branded stores that used to be Albertsons have closed since the Albertsons purch...

Re: Super Saver "by Albertsons" - Utah
The lack of stores in Utah creates a massive "hole" in the combined company's geography. I am sure they would love to buy the stores there back that they sold. But I can guarantee you those stores, owned and operated by Associated Food Stores, are not for sale. A number of the stores have ...

Re: Kmart's Time Is Running Out
I was in the Sparks, NV Kmart today. It appears they have emptied out the stockroom as there are new displays of clearance items in one of the main walkways; primarily housewares and drug items. The garden department had no live plants at all and very little hoses, dirt, etc. left. I noticed one ais...

Re: Sobeys Buys Canada Safeway
I think until they can start showing profitability the growth of the Albertsons empire is being temporarily kept at bay. To be fair they do have some digesting to do based on the past nine months.

Re: Kroger to buy Roundy's for $800 million
I was in 3 stores with the late 1990's decor and one with the decor you describe that looked awful (that one has since closed, I think the other 3 which looked nice are still open).
The one with the nicer interior photos below sure looks dark.

Re: Albertsons to buy Paul's Market
I think you're right. I wonder who came up with the idea to do cheap 72 hour style remodels when taking stores over. I tend to believe it is a "debranding" stipulation that is put forth by the seller. The first time I saw it done was in 1997 when Save Mart took over about 10 Lucky Stores i...

Re: Albertsons to buy Paul's Market
I think they are better off waiting and doing better remodels vs. trying to do 72 hour remodels in the Save Mart and Haggen fashion. Funny when they are the one buying the stores they do it right but when they sell stores for some reason these sloppy cheap looking 72 hour remodels are part of the pr...
