Atlas Market in Poway

I accidentally stumbled on this today. It was a former Albertson's / Haggen that opened about a year ago in the San Diego suburb of Poway. They did a very ambitious remodel for an independent. Google has a virtual tour where you can walk through the entire store: https://www.google.com/maps/place/At...

Re: Gelson's looking to sell owned stores....

Carlsbad was indeed downsized. ........ The only mystery is the Santa Monica store -- but I think that one is close enough to the famous Venice Whole Foods that people seeking that experience just go to Whole Foods. I think ALL of the struggling stores would have done better if they had new exterio...

Re: Walmart to open a maximum of 10 new stores in FY2020

From that article: "“I want to challenge your thinking about Walmart,” Chief Executive Doug McMillon told the Bentonville, Ark., company’s annual investor meeting, which was webcast. “We are getting to reimagine retail and our business ... expect us to test a lot and fail a lot.” If I was an investo...

Gelson's looking to sell owned stores....

Gelson's currently owns three of their 27 stores (free standing locations in West Hollywood and Pacific Palisades, and a shopping center in Calabasas) and according to this article they apparently want to sell them and lease them back: https://www.wehoville.com/2018/10/15/weho-city-council-consider-...

Re: Safeway 7th Street and McDowell Road Remodel

Most of the larger Vons stores here in L.A. are set up with packaged bread near the bakery. I assumed that was common in a lot of legacy Safeway stores.. 3rd & Vermont: https://www.google.com/maps/uv?hl=en&pb=!1s0x80c2c764543e099d%3A0xebd2f9233042c85a!2m22!2m2!1i80!2i80!3m1!2i20!16m16!1b1!2m2!1m1!1e...

Re: Vons Sells Silverlake/Los Feliz Location to Children's Hospital Los Angeles for $90 Million

The Vons is NOT in Hollywood. Hollywood is west of the 101. Hollywood Blvd. STARTS in front of the Vons breaking off from Sunset. That is where Los Feliz and Silverlake start. Little Armenia/East Hollywood is to the west of the Vons. Actually you are wrong. It is in Hollywood: Screen Shot 2018-10-0...

Re: Vons Sells Silverlake/Los Feliz Location to Children's Hospital Los Angeles for $90 Million

The Albertsons store to the north is pretty small on a tight lot. It looks like it was a Lucky. I think that Albertsons wants to keep the Vons alive as long as they reasonably can, though, otherwise they would've closed it in a hurry. The $90 million price tag probably is worth it as it essentially...

Re: Vons Sells Silverlake/Los Feliz Location to Children's Hospital Los Angeles for $90 Million

For a price tag of $90 million they have to have other plans for the property. There's no way the lease from a free standing supermarket would even come close to acheiving a satisfactory return on investment. They would need a minimum $250,000 a month in rent from Vons for 30 years just to get the $...

Re: Albertsons/Safeway 2018: Openings and Closings

Nice looking former Smiths that looks extremely spacious inside. It was roughly 25 years ago that Smiths made their ill-fated re-entry into Southern California and I would imagine this store is coming off lease. Those stores were way to big and I'm surprised they didn't downsize it when they did wh...

Re: Jungle Jim

Okay, I got to go to Jingle Jim. Words cannot describe my 2+ hour visit to the store located east of Cincinnati. I guess that was the former Bigg's. ... Overall this store was the best grocery store I've ever seen. The atmosphere and product mix was so unique and unlike any other I've seen before. ...
