Re: New Kmart Grocery Prototype

At this point, what's left of Kmart is in either one of two modes: survival or maximization of real estate value. Survival will see some new items, but only enough to barely stay afloat. The other; well, just watch for continued closures. That being said, Kmart has never pulled off a Target or Walma...

Re: Bi Lo and Winn Dixie Closing 23 Stores

As of yet, none of the Louisiana stores have been fully revealed. I can't find anything in the news about it. Has anyone seen the full list?

Re: Sparks, NV Kmart Distribution Center Closing

During the 2003 bankruptcy, they closed Corsicana, TX. It made sense at the time, because they went from over 200 Texas stores to 19. I really feel we may not have Kmart much longer. Unless someone steps in and really changes the company. Lampert is only interested in selling off the property, both ...

Re: Dollar Tree Buying Family Dollar

The name will probably be phased out in favor of Dollar Tree as well. I wouldn't wait on that. Since Dollar Tree already operates Deal$, it wouldn't be that much of a stretch for them to operate Family Dollar. Family Dollar is still profitable, it just isn't *as* profitable as it once was. That sca...

Publix

I can now say with authority that I know why Publix truly is Where Shopping is a Pleasure. I got to go into a store in Kissimmee, FL down the street from Disney. It is well laid out, with a great selection in a fairly small store. You walk in and are immediately greeted by a large seasonal departmen...

Re: Signs of trouble at Target?

Target must be having a lower rate of returns to be able to write off customer service counters. Whenever I go into Kmart or Wal Mart, I always see customers at the customer service areas. I don't think it's quite that easy. Walmart's returns are far less intrusive than Target. When you return an i...

Re: Albertsons-Safeway Merger effect on Dallas?

I would think there would be a good amount of closures there. Albertsons and Tom Thumb are a lot alike. Tom Thumb was a local banner before the Randalls and later Safeway purchase. Even after the combination, however, they wouldn't come close to #1, because Walmart has that in the bag. After closure...

Re: Fry's Marketplace To Add Clothing

I've been to some newly-remodeled Fred Meyer stores in the Seattle area. I really like their selection and the quality is good. I'd like to see Kroger explore opening up similar stores in their regions, a "Super Ralphs" or Fry's or what-have-you. It's a great alternative to the Walmart ch...

Re: Rite Aid locations in Fort Bragg, CA

I have heard of Walmart keeping leases on closed buildings for years and years to keep competition out, but have never heard of Rite Aid doing this. In several locations in Louisiana, where Rite Aid took over K&B, there is a specific lease restriction on any store that they have closed that sti...

Re: Fred's Super Dollar Possible Sale To CVS, Walgreens, Etc

Okay, here's my take on this: I don't see Dollar General (or Family Dollar) being successful in a bid for Fred's on any level. There is just way too much overlap. And they do almost the same thing, minus the pharmacies. If either want a piece of that business, then they could buy Fred's for that. I ...
