Re: Macy's announces new round of closings

Macy's really confuses me. Every year they "restructure" and seem to have some sort of major downsizing thing after the holidays. It appears every year it gets worse and more drastic. I don't know what to think, I think they have a strong brand and a good product mix. They seem to have a ...

Re: Retail holiday sales down all over the place

Honestly, as someone who works in an office full of shoppers, they are always on the "bargain" hunt. My one coworker has shopped Sears Outlet, ROSS Stores, and coupons at the grocery and drug retailers. Plenti points brought her into Rite Aid but did nothing to lead her into Macy's. I sti...

Re: Sears/Kmart Death Watch 2017

This thread will serve as a new area for discussions on the impending death of Sears and Kmart, not necessarily tied to store closings themselves listed in other threads. First, Sears has officially sold Craftsman to Stanley Black & Decker: http://www.clickondetroit.com/news/sears-sells-craftsm...

Re: Winn-Dixie continues Down Down (the drain?)

Down Down is probably the right strategy since so many of Winn Dixie's prices are higher than Publix. Plus the stores suck. Period. If Winn-Dixie can update its store base, restore its reputation for being an inexpensive and solid grocer, and bring back most of its stores into the future, then I wo...

Re: Walgreens Close To Buying Rite Aid

$2.50 for Nabisco Saltine Crackers? Ralphs had them last week for 99 cents and they're normally $1.99. Duncan Hines Cake Mix and Frosting $1.50 each. Vons had them for 88 Cents last week. Ground beef chubs are not something Rite Aid carries now. Not sure why you are comparing supermarket prices to ...

Re: Walgreens Close To Buying Rite Aid

I wonder if Fred's is prepared for what it is getting into with this deal. They will gain quite a few stores in CA and this format looks pretty questionable for use in CA, based on their ad. $4 folding pocket knife? Daewoo Microwave? I'm not sure how a 'California Pharmacy' is any different than th...

Re: Former A&P stores acquired by others not doing well

They didn't specifically mention ACME in the article, which I would think based on the chatter here, be a prime candidate given its service and pricing issues. They were the ones that took the most operating stores. Acme ditched Self-Checkouts and hasn't been living up to the promises of more staff...

Re: Meridian, Idaho Shopko closing

*Disclaimer: I have never been to a Shopko owned store. Ever* The secondary format is what I can best describe as the in-between store. It's not as small as Dollar General and Family Dollar, but it's also not quite a full line Walmart-sized store. Their closest competitor would be Fred's Super Doll...

Re: Safeway removes self checkout in Bend, OR

I heard Costco's self checkout experiment failed and they will not roll it out to additional stores. They seemed to have found it did not work well in high volume locations and I suspect theft was a factor. They said it worked well in medium volume locations but that profile did not fit most of the...

Re: Walgreens Close To Buying Rite Aid

I remember a few years back Dollar General and Rite Aid partnered together on a few stores somewhere that were a split Rite Aid and Dollar General Market...are those still around? You may be thinking of the partnership between Rite Aid and Save A Lot. Those are still around. I haven't heard of DG p...
