Re: Happy Valley (Oregon) gets its own Fred Meyer
The article says the store is 143,000 sq. ft. How does that compare with other Fred Meyer stores?

Re: First 365 by Whole Foods opens Wednesday
Gelson's has finished the remodel of their store in Silver Lake that will compete with the new 365 by Whole Foods down the street. They have gone a completely different direction by adding more service departments. In addition to the Service Deli, Service Seafood and Victor Bene's bakery they had be...

Re: Ralphs Riverside Closing Nov. 11, Stater Bros. to replace
I would understand if these were marginal stores riding out their leases, but from what it sounds like, at least this store, they've made the decision to sell their store to Stater Bros., which is a standard move for grocers leaving a market (or sub-market). The Inland Empire (Riverside and San Ber...

Re: Ralphs Riverside Closing Nov. 11, Stater Bros. to replace
I'm not going to go off on a tangent regarding unions and my opinion of them, but a company just can't retreat when it smells competition, that's incredibly bad business decisions. The wide swath of destruction from Walmart has been from companies who largely could not or did not conform to the fut...

I have to echo your posit on Aldi and Smart/Final. My empirical experiences, coupled with ongoing conversations with management, support your observations. Exactly. Some of the stores being closed have been remodeled in the last three to five years. So clearly the thinking three to five years ago w...

Re: Kroger "Flash Sales"
What I am wondering is what is the point of doing an unadvertised sale like this for one day in the store? Just get some extra sales from customers who are already in the store? I suspect they are losing money on some of these items at 50% off since their prices on the category are already very low...

Re: Ralphs Riverside Closing Nov. 11, Stater Bros. to replace
Last ditch effort to save performance by doing a remodel? That could be part of it. I think the bigger issue has to deal with the expansion of non-union price impact chains like Aldi and Smart & Final. These remodels were done before Aldi announced their expansion and before Smart & Final p...

Re: Crucial times for Shoppers
I would be uncomfortable being supported, as a grocer, by a wholesaler that doesn't do at least some retailing on their own. Not being able to pass that expertise on to your customers could be a bad precedent. It says 'we can supply you, but don't ask for help'. I know that the co-op model isn't mu...

Re: Albertsons IPO- no status
Real growth stats should have relative and comparative values (in context of course) to have any meaning at all. Otherwise it's just propaganda serving a narrative. True. The two periods are difficult to compare because the severity of the 'great depression' was so much greater than the 'great rece...
