Re: Fred Meyer and product packaging

When I worked at Kroger, they've started updating the product packaging, and trying to make their packaging less generic. For a time (early 2000s, I think?) they were engaging in "full knockoff" mode, with "Chips Ahoy!" and "Chips Amatey!" in almost the same font and co...

Re: Brookshire Brothers buys 25 store retailer

With the news that Brookshire's wants to sell out, makes me wonder if Brookshire Brothers can "re-unite" the two chains. Despite interested sharks circling the waters (Kroger, Albertsons, H-E-B), Brookshire's wanted to retain an identity, which it couldn't really do with the three.

Re: Albertsons LLC Opening LA Store

I just reconfirmed; it was April of 2004 that Albertsons sold stores to A&P and closed what they didn't want. The Mandeville store has been Albertsons twice; it isn't coming back this time. Yeah, I know Albertsons 2.0 is dead, they basically gutted the space because they wanted a Whole Foods mo...

Albertsons Store Numbers (and what they mean)

Hey everyone, I'm trying to make a list of Albertsons store numbers and what they mean in terms of geographic placement....Albertsons has actually renumbered a few stores to not conflict with Safeway stores with that number, so this list isn't 100% what that store means anymore. ;) 1xx: Intermountai...

Re: Safeway to renovate Moon Valley store in Phoenix

Safeway has been in AZ since the 1920s (when it was known as Pay N Takit)...Albertsons has only been here since 1990. Safeway does well here because they are often the only big store in the small AZ towns where Walmart won't go into because of size. Which means the Albertsons name will probably go ...

Re: Albertsons LLC Opening LA Store

I thought the Mandeville Albertsons (v1) pulled out with the rest of the NOLA stores in 2002 with the slash-and-burn of the Houston/San Antonio stores. There was another store near New Orleans that was sold to Sav-a-Center, which became Rouses. By 2005 (and Katrina) Albertsons was only in Baton Rouge.

Re: Vons WLA closing, new Pavilions to replace

According to Flickr, Several years before buying Safeway, Albertsons (Cerberus) had sold a store near TCU for a new mixed-use development to be built with an Albertsons below it. Instead, the developer ended up selling the land (it was right around the time of the recession) to Kroger (whoops). Albe...

Re: Demise of unionized supermarkets

The Max was indeed Albertsons "discount" brand for a while (early 1990s I think?) I'm not too concerned about the demise of unionized supermarkets. I imagine it's very beneficial for some, but it's terrible for low level workers, when I worked at Kroger, getting a union membership would pu...

Re: Amelia's Bought By Grocery Outlet

Not sure about Grocery Outlet's move to the East Coast. Their short time in Texas and the Southwest in the early 2000s didn't go over that well.

Re: What now, SuperValu?

Much of the Save-a-Lots are already franchised, spinning off the rest probably comes with still supplying them, and of course, the centers went back with Albertsons. The 2012 factbook of SVU (still up somewhere on the web, found it earlier this week) shows SVU-supplied stores heavily concentrated in...
