Texas Panhandle, West Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas market share

Post by SamSpade »

Via The Packer, The Shelby Report puts Walmart in the lead, but if you combine United and Albertsons-Safeway they are actually number one.
...markets of Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Las Cruces, El Paso, Amarillo, Lubbock, Wichita Falls, Abilene, Odessa
Walmart leads market in west Texas, but Albertsons/Safeway show gains

No, they are ahead in store count. Market Share, the true metric of this, is still lower than Walmart.
  • Walmart: 107 stores, 41% market share, up 0.6 points compared with last year
  • Albertsons/Safeway: 104 stores, 24.8% market share, up 10.8 points
  • United Family: 47 stores, 11% market share, up 0.3 points
So they have 151 stores, and 35.8% market share.

That is a really strange definition of market "January retail market share in West Texas/New Mexico/Colorado/Kansas (including the markets of Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Las Cruces, El Paso, Amarillo, Lubbock, Wichita Falls, Abilene, Odessa)."

A lot of these markets have nothing to do with each other.

I wouldn't think Fry's would have ANY market share seeing as to how their aren't any Fry's stores in the markets of Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Las Cruces, El Paso, Amarillo, Lubbock, Wichita Falls, Abilene, and Odessa.

What about Lowe’s/Texas , which operates mostly in smaller towns in NM and W Texas?

I believe that's the Lowe's/Pay and Save mentioned.

There are Smith's stores in New Mexico, but not in the Texas cities mentioned. Dillon's/King/Soopers/City Markets have stores in Kansas and Colorado. But to the point made earlier in the thread, these disparate areas are not part of the same market.

As to Colorado, does this include the Front Range cities, or only East Colorado? King Sooners only operates along the Front Range, not in the east part of the state.

It doesn't say. Kroger doesn't appear to operate any stores in East Colorado. Dillon's is limited to Kansas, Baker's is metro Omaha, and as you said King Soopers is along the Front Range. The article is just wrong.
