Food 4 Less East Hollywood Proposed Demolition

Post by CalItalian »

735 apartments & over 95,000 sq. feet of retail (no word if any would be a market) would replace the Food 4 Less on the corner of Western and Sunset. This is an original Zody's, opened as a The Giant (by Ralphs). It also once had a Thrifty Drug Store on the western side of the (former) Zody's building. http://la.curbed.com/2017/3/15/14931718 ... apartments. There is a Ralphs just a few blocks north on the corner of Hollywood and Western. This area is under heavy gentrification.

The stalled Target development, sitting partially finished now for nearly 3 years, sits across the street in what was the former Alpha Beta shopping center.

Wow.. that's pretty amazing considering the story behind that Target across the street. I'm also curious why the Target location is only allowed to build a height of 35 feet and the F4L property can build up to 75 feet.

The Target fiasco is fascinating. The building was about 70% of the way built. Neighbors trying to stop growth in Hollywood filed a lawsuit to get the project stopped won and it has just been sitting there unfinished for three years.

Yeah, the unfinished shell of a building is much better than the Target would be.

One of the comments on the article in the original post suggests that the difference is since the Target is strictly a retail use, while this property would be a combination of retail and housing.
That would make sense, as the portion that is retail is not likely to be above the 35 foot level, with the residence portion above that?
