Obviously someone else wants the space and may be willing to pay more for it. Or the landlord is trying to play it off as such. It appears this "may close" announcement is a pawn move by Albertsons to try to get customers upset over the pending closure.

If the landlord were to come out and say Trader Joe's or Sprouts was interested in the space (and pay more than Vons for it I guess) then what would the customers think?

Unless Vons is especially small, Trader Joe's or Sprouts will still leave a portion vacant, unless they've got a non-food retailer to take up space. Assuming that there's not a "better" retailer in the wings, Vons is probably playing chicken with the landlord to avoid a rent hike.

That's another good point, the landlord may be considering how much they can get dividing the space up vs. how much they can get with the grocery store in all of the space.

Vons just remodeled this store in 2015 so I have to think that they were pretty confident the lease would be renewed. I agree the information for this article definitely came from Vons in an attempt to pressure the owner of the shopping center to renew their lease.

The neighborhood in which that store is located is predominantly Armenian/Middle Eastern. Maybe the landlord wants to lease that building to an ethnic grocer that caters to the Armenian community like Jons Marketplace (all they have to do is replace the "V" with a "J" in the signage  ) or a Super King Market.

Similar to what happened with the former Alhambra Ralphs that became an 99 Ranch Market, and the soon to be Vallarta former Vons or Fair Oaks.

Usually in that case, the supermarket WANTS to close because the demographics no longer really work with the brand, and usually those places don't pay a HIGHER rent than the original chain.

It's officially closing, rumor has it that Stater Bros will be taking over. No official word yet.
