It says that the Vons was open in 1971 originally, but it looks like it may have started something else even earlier.

Stater Bros officially announced they're taking over the lease and open a store on the site.

I've never been inside a Stater Bros before, looking forward to the new store.

Here's a recently opened Stater in a former Ralph's. I would think it would be similar (the other store is a little larger):
Yelp: Stater Bros Riverside
Google Maps: Stater Bros Riverside

There is a nearby Sprouts in the same center. Apparently enough grocery demand for all!

So, Vons said they wanted to keep the store open but the property owner wanted Stater Bros instead. I wonder why they rejected Vons?

Maybe the landlord wants to lease that building to an ethnic grocer that caters to the Armenian community like Jons Marketplace (all they have to do is replace the "V" with a "J" in the signage  ) or a Super King Market.

Similar to what happened with the former Alhambra Ralphs that became an 99 Ranch Market, and the soon to be Vallarta former Vons or Fair Oaks.
I would think with its smaller company size and local footprint, Stater could potentially do just that.

So that will be Stater Bros. westernmost store (at least in the San Gabriel Valley), right? Currently they only go as far as the Azusa/Glendora border.

As far as the San Gabriel Valley goes the current westernmost store is West Covina.

As far was westernmost in general I think it would be Simi Valley.

A lot of their early stores did exactly that (Although they're changed the logo since):

This one still has original logo.

This one still has original logo one the sign above the store.

I think it is interesting at this point a landlord would favor Stater over Vons. I recall this happened with Ralphs a year or two ago as well...

Well, good for Stater. Customers will see price decreases and better service levels in the store. Maybe it is a win? Stater is the only conventional operator in SoCal who has store count gains in the past 5-10 years so they seem to do something (a lot) right, even if their stores aren't very exciting.
