Issues with Concord Safeway

Post by storewanderer »

Bay Area Media all over this story.

Odd thing is I went into this store really late at night last summer. I don't recall seeing anything terribly unusual. I was able to park right against the building and go in without walking through the parking lot at all... It was the typical Safeway from what I observed. I recall during my late night visit there were 2-3 cashiers open which was better than the typical Safeway. I also recall having a scan error which was not handled too well, again, typical Safeway.

I saw the news videos and they made this store to appear to be an awful place. In my experiences, I have not had any major problems. There were beggars, but this is much worse in supermarkets in San Francisco.

This Safeway is mostly a nice suburban store. I suspect that the Concord police want to clean up the area as it is very close to the downtown area and to the Police Headquarters. They want the downtown area to be spotless and free of the homeless, so that it will be a showcase downtown.

I did notice that the parking lot is very dark at night and has overgrown landscaping. Muggers could hide and ambush people.

The homeless people are not there because of Safeway, they are there because of the train station which allows the homeless to ride in from San Francisco. The police want these homeless people to go back to San Francisco and not ruin this quaint suburb. Concord Police wants Safeway to crackdown on these homeless people and get them arrested or taken away.

Regardless of whether this level of complaint is warranted in Concord, Safeway/Albertsons seems to be in the media for the wrong reasons far too frequently around the country right now. These complaints are stemming from across demographic and socioeconomic lines, so we can only hope that Albertsons is taking these comments seriously with plans to improve operations. As it stands now, the company is becoming increasingly irrelevant in markets with even decent competition.

In this case, it seems that it has nothing to do with store operations per se, but rather the problems surrounding it. Likely, the Safeway predated the elevated rail track running through the parking lot...

Looks like the store has a lot of operational problems based on the Yelp reviews.

One thing that is missing is a recent photo of long lines standing below 3's a Crowd signs. Unlike some other Safeway in Concord where someone posted a photo of that last week... https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/safeway ... 35oM22-vQg This chain is such a joke... why did these signs go up, then the 3's a Crowd promise not met, so signs removed for a while, and now signs are posted again and they are still not meeting it? Seriously the signs should have just stayed down. I know Bob Miller can do better than this. Here's another one from a different location in Pittsburg, CA in July. https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/safeway ... zmpXUSOU1w Wow just wow.

They capitulated to what the community and the local police wanted.
