Save Mart Lucky low budget remodels

Post by storewanderer »

It looks like Save Mart is doing some low budget type remodels to its Lucky Stores now rather than the nicer more major remodel first attempted.

The Redwood City Woodside Store is currently getting remodeled.

The old mid 90's ASC white and beige checkerboard floor is all covered up by a gray mock wood type linoleum. Shelves are being reset.

The walls have been repainted and new cheap large ugly wall fixtures installed.

The old Albertsons tiles are still behind perimeter departments and at this time no new refrigerated cases are installed (most look to be from a 2004 or so era Albertsons remodel not old 90's stuff).

A little disappointed to see they are going the cheap route on remodels now. I don't think this will help their position much. They need to cut out underperforming stores and regions and then use that money to properly remodel their stores that are in less competitive areas as the fully done remodels like Oakdale are truly great.

Remodels are generally influenced by a number of factors, including the condition of the store, the time passed since its last remodel, the performance of a store, the intended longevity, etc.

Consider Kroger Company’s renovations: two identcal stores, built around the same time period, were renovated simultaneously. One received a completely new interior, whereas the other simply received minor improvements (expanded freezer casings, etc.) and a new decor package. Consider that the store that received a new interior may be located in Irvine - which will remain one of the wealthiest cities in the country for at least the next generation - whereas the one that received minor improvements may be located in Northern Orange County, which is experiencing a steady decline in discrentinary income and a large increase in Hispanics that prefer to shop elsewhere. Kroger may not feel this area would be able to support one of their stores in several years, hence the light renovation.

I understand that with most chains. Save Mart is a bit different. This is a chain that from about 2009-2015 did virtually no remodels to ANY of their stores (unless you count DEmodels of conventional stores to formats Maxx Value and Food Maxx; they did spend money on those removing departments, flooring, etc.).
