It had a garden area. You can see it from the 2D image. It's in the back of the store:

The KMart is definitely being torn down. The new store will be built to the left of the stores that are next to the current Vons and will face Arneill Road. The KMart faced Ponderosa Drive.

Vons will gain a lot more parking as well as a stand alone mini-mart and fuel pumps.

Page 4 has the site plan.
That is a weird Kmart building. No garden area? I wonder what it was originally.

The only thing is the Vons gas station may make more sense at the corner of the lot, but that would make for a very odd parking lot for the Vons. The way the gas station sits it sort of looks like it obstructs the flow of the entire parking lot.
It definitely had a garden area. It appears to be in an addition to the building and the garden area is in the back instead of the front where it would normally be found:

Oh, that is a pretty large indoor garden area at that with two doors in/out. And the auto repair bay next to it also.

Also looking at the front of the Kmart I see it has two entry/exit points on each side of the front. That is very unusual for a Kmart. Maybe this thing was built as a Kmart, but it is a rather different design. It kind of feels like it was really squeezed onto the lot.

The larger Vons will probably make the overall lot look better. The Kmart kind of seems out of place there for some reason.

The revised plan does look more coherent with everything facing the right direction, as the article had implied that the Vons would roughly take the same footprint.

A little digging shows the Kmart opened in 1977 in a former Grant store.

Thanks for finding that. I did a little research and gave up before finding anything.
