This is a week away, but The Market by Safeway is opening up on the ground floor of a condominium complex in San Jose, California on August 28, 2009. It is a small format grocery store. Basically it carries a limited selection of items with an emphasis on prepared meals and convenient to-go foods.
Also, this is the first appearance of a Tully's Coffee kiosk inside of a Safeway or Vons. Normally Safeway has Starbucks kiosks. I believe that some Supervalu Albertsons stores got rid of their Starbucks and replaced them with Tully's. Perhaps, a Tully's kiosk is cheaper for Safeway to run.
At 22,300 square feet, the store is almost twice as big as The Market by Vons in Long Beach, California. That store is 12,000-square-feet.
