Associated Closing Millcreek Dan's

Post by SamSpade »

dans market on 3300 south in millcreek closing on jan 20
Closest nearby stores in this more upscale Salt Lake area neighborhood are a very nice Harmon's at the Brickyard shopping center and Smith's Marketplace near where 3300 S meets I-215.
The Dan’s on 3300 South is one of two grocery stores that Associated Food Stores has decided to close this month. The Macey’s store in Clinton will close on Jan 27.

Isn't this an old Smiths?

Not surprised it is closing.

Associated Retail needs to reevaluate their pricing and promotions. They've become quite uncompetitive. They run clean stores with decent quality items but nothing to justify prices slightly higher than Smiths, which they seem to have.

The Dan’s on 3300 has “been around for a long time and had a long and good run,” he said. When the store opened several decades ago, it was across the street, where Rite Aid is now. Later it moved to its current location, a former Smith’s Food & Drug.

Associated does not own the Dan’s Market building and the current lease is winding down,

Associated made a mistake buying most of the Utah Albertson’s stores. The Albertson’s stores weren’t in the best shape. They were suffering under SuperValu. They had prices that were higher than Smith’s for the same quality. Under Associated the prices went up, they went the the Western Family private label, that’s regarded by many as inferior to both national and other store brands. Then the “Associated Fresh Market” branding never took off. The stores weren’t updated. The product presentation was poorer than abs or Smith’s and almost as bad Wal-Mart. The prices were higher than Smith’s or Walmart, and they did little to promote the chain. My theory is Associated bought the stores because Associated is ran like a trust. None of those old Albertson’s stores have closed are either empty, now under a different ARO banner or owned by a member of Associated. If Kroger or Walmart tried to do the same thing to exert control over the grocery market in Utah people would be asking for the FTC to investigate. It was just a play to stop someone from buying the weakest chain in the market.

It is no secret the reason they have any corporate owned stores was to retain the supply agreements. Had they not bought out these Dicks, Dans, Maceys, Lins, etc., someone else would have and that someone else may not have been an Associated customer.

I was surprised they did not do something to keep the Pauls business in Boise... but Pauls was not quite as inter-linked with Associated as many of its customers are. Pauls did not use Associated's registers, ad service, or many of their marketing programs.

I have noticed it is quite rare for any store affiliated with Associated to close... can't even think of any examples offhand aside from some moves in the mid-late 90's where they lost one independent store in Winnemucca to Albertsons (they did manage to get that one back in 2006 as Save Mart didn't want it with NorCal) and lost the independent store in West Wendover to Smiths (store still looks like an AFS Independent inside); some of the things they supply in rural Nevada, it is just incredible these things still operate.
