BOISE, Idaho, Feb. 07, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- At the groundbreaking ceremony last June for Albertsons Companies’ new Broadway Market location, CEO Bob Miller hinted that Boise shoppers had better ready themselves for a brand-new shopping scene, unlike any other in Idaho. Today, the company is proud to announce that it is creating a culinary experience that invites customers to Eat Life Up with the formal introduction of Market Street Idaho to Treasure Valley shoppers.

“Market Street Idaho was created by a team of passionate, innovative food lovers with the goal of igniting Idaho’s passion for great food and elevated experiences," said Susan Morris, EVP and Chief Operations Officer of Albertsons Companies. “Boise’s deep roots in great local food stem from our farming and ranching industry to our refugee and Basque communities. We think the time is right to bring new culinary experiences many hunger for but haven’t gotten yet locally through our Market Street Idaho stores.”

Promising exclusive culinary delights and unique dishes, the Treasure Valley’s two Market Street Idaho stores will encourage customers to hone their inner chef through in-store culinary events and classes as well as time savers like catering services, an in-store restaurant style food court and other gourmet creations fit for the most discerning customers.

“In our Market Street Idaho store, our dedicated chocolatier might partner with one of our scratch bakers to create an art deco cake for an exclusive event, or our Head of Catering might work with our sommelier and masters in our fresh team to craft an exclusive wine pairing experience with fresh fruits and cheeses. We’re elevating the idea of what a grocery store can be here,” said John Colgrove, president of the company’s Intermountain division. “In addition, we have so many creative culinary positions available. We encourage everyone to follow us Facebook and Instagram as we build this team and create something truly special in the Treasure Valley.”

The Broadway location of Market Street Idaho will open in early summer 2018, and the Meridian location on Eagle & Fairview is planned for later this year. Store Director Brian Conley has been selected to operate the Broadway Market Street Idaho store, which ultimately is expected to employ more than 200 people. The West Boise location will name a store director later this summer, in time to curate the anticipated staff of more than 300 people. In order to complete the new Market Street Idaho store on Broadway Avenue, the company will close the existing Broadway store in early April. Employees will be offered opportunities in surrounding stores and may apply for positions at the new store once hiring begins. Those interested in pursuing employment can submit resumes to hr@marketstreetidaho.com.

Gotta say I'm intrigued at this development. It's clearly aping the name of Market Street in Texas but the cross-pollination out of United instead of the other way around is a refreshing breath of air. The fact that it's called "Market Street Idaho" indicate for now it's Intermountain only.

Looking at the logo on its Instagram page, it could easily be changed to read "Market Street Chicago," "Market Street Philly," or "Market Street Poughkeepsie."

To me, it seems like they want to keep this format close to HQ, see what works and doesn't, and expand if it is successful. Alternatively, they could create "Market Street" departments in stores under other banners. Or both!

Should be interesting.

Jewel-Osco seems to do relatively well in terms of having an "upscale" counterpart (it was, after all, the "jewel" of the SuperValu stores), and effort has made toward revitalizing Pavilions as a more upscale counterpart to Vons. While Albertsons new Market Street can't be used in North Texas for obvious reasons (and San Francisco for different obvious reasons), they could drag the Flagship name back out after the name having languished under Safeway, though even the newest and most modern Tom Thumb stores don't have it (yet).

The Broadway store has always been a unique location. It was the last Albertsons in Boise to install scanners and automatic doors. It also had a couple of unique interiors. The 1980s remodel used an interior package with pictures instead of the stripes which were used on other stores with the 1980s interior, and the current interior was a one-off. The "Broadway Market" signage was unique to this location.

I always thought it was weird to have such an old store located so close to Albertsons headquarters though. It makes sense to have this new concept nearby.

Part of me wants to take a road trip to Boise before April to visit the current Broadway store one final time, but I don't see that happening. This was once my neighborhood store and I watched the transformation that took place as it expanded in the 1980s.

Will be interesting to see how this goes.

Could be interesting as a concept for a re-entry into Salt Lake City also.

There were a few other "Market" stores with unique signage. There was one in Fort Worth area that's still open (forgot where though), there was a store in San Francisco (planned to be Lucky and ended up being Lucky in the end), the reopening of the College Station, TX store (aborted), and a few others.

The Fort Worth store in question is located at 3563 Alton Rd, Fort Worth, TX 76109 in the Westcliff Market close to TCU.

Come to think of it, there were also a few "...Market by Jewel" stores. Looks like most if not all have been re-branded "Jewel-Osco"

Looks like the Broadway store will end up keeping the Albertsons name after all:

They say it will be an Albertsons partially to local heritage but I also think that they want to focus the MSI concept to the 100k square foot store and see how that works before they do any expansion or alteration of the concept.
