Wow, Albertsons seems to be gradually abandoning East Portland. Stores closed with no replacement include 82nd & Division, Eastport Plaza (where Albertsons closed, then returned and built a new store which also closed), another store at 122nd & Halsey, a store on Powell. For what it's worth though, Albertsons seems to be faltering in the Portland market, as there are other scattered areas where stores have closed, even across the river in Vancouver, WA. When the stores are dirty and poorly staffed people tend to not go there in the first place when there are other choices.

They are also operating oddly around Seattle. The stuff in the general Seattle area, south, east, and even north mostly looks terrible. Most have been remodeled by SVU to some extent but the stores are dirty, poorly staffed, and have prices far higher than anyone else. Perimeters don't look good at all.

But the stores across the sound west of Seattle as a whole look great... but that is only a half dozen or so locations. The pricing issues continue but the rest of it all seemed good there.

I also have been in some ID/UT Albertsons Stores in the past month or so. Clean stores. Terrible pricing, and I do mean terrible. Perimeters had a poor selection. Hardly any customers. $7.99 for Dryers or Breyers Ice Cream... in the 1.5 quart. Frozen meals all in the $5 range (some more some less). Fruits like apples or soft fruits were all about $1 a pound above other places. Just too much.

Dare I say, I'd rather shop in a Save Mart than one of these WA/ID/UT Albertsons Stores.

I should add the Albertsons LLC stuff I've been to in Phoenix, Denver, and even Albuquerque (some variance in store quality between locations in that market though) is so far superior to this garbage known as SVU Albertsons or Save Mart. The UT Fresh Markets fall somewhere in the middle; not as good as LLC, but better than SVU or Save Mart.

The only Albertsons stores I have been in over the last few years that truly looked nice were the Boise stores. I think SVU is putting a little more effort into those as they have long been the dominant traditional grocer there. Competition is arriving though as WinCo has expanded their presence, as well as Fred Meyer and Walmart.

I was in the Padden Parkway store in Vancouver, WA not long ago, the newest location in Vancouver. Half of the light tubes were removed (a common occurence in their stores in this area) and that store was not busy at all and seemed dirty. They also did a rather cheap-looking remodel to the Salmon Creek store (a mid-90s build) not too long ago where they painted all the walls white but left the floor tiles from the blue-grey package intact, and also pointed the variety aisles in the same direction as the main grocery aisles, but did not also rearrange the lighting over those aisles.

I can't figure out SVU's intentions in the Portland market. As they close stores and do minimal upkeep, it's as if they are no longer a serious competitor. It's pretty sad when the grocery section of a Walmart Supercenter looks better than most Albertsons stores these days.

I also want to tell you that this Albertsons was once a Fred Meyer store. Fred Meyer operated in this location from 1958 to 1985.

Is it the same building though, or did Albertsons build a new store on the site?

The original FM store was torn down before Albertsons moved in. As I said before, FM moved to Division at 148th in late 1985.
