Total Count of new Albertsons/Safeway stores in 2016

Post by pseudo3d »

To complement my list of openings/closings for 2016 Albertsons/Safeway, I'm doing openings too. Most (almost all) of the openings Albertsons Cos. did was reopening acquired supermarket sites and the (*) means that it was operating as the original brand before it was turned into its respective brand. Generally, unless otherwise stated, it's either the grand opening or when the newspaper article came out on it. 1. First former Haggen re-converted?
2. Early reports indicated it would open under "SuperSaver Foods" but it did not.
3. These one had some conversion drama, the former was supposed to open in March with Albertsons decor, but didn't. Date opened is somewhat guesswork.
4. I couldn't actually find a date for this one, though a Yelp review is from early July. It's an estimate as to when it opened.
5. These ones I have not yet nailed down a date, but it did appear to reopen this year.
6. Renumbered from 250 Fairmont Shopping Center, Albertsons prior to 2007 though likely Lucky and at least one name prior to that; partially rebuilt
7. Completely rebuilt, former Longs, also moving from an older location
8. This is the biggest one with the "Which banner" drama.

Stuff That Won't Be Listed:
- Stores that tore down and rebuilt an older store of the same name and address (Jersey Shore ACME stores)
- 1800 Rockville Pike, Rockville, MD opened late December 2015 from what I can tell
- I didn't list the stores that converted to Safeway (that includes Florida, Metro Denver, and that one store in the Dallas suburbs), as they never even closed to do so, nor did I list the Pavilions stores converted to Vons.
- The Haggen stores were inducted into the Albertsons family, but they were not added.

Other Notes:
- With the addition of Patterson, I should have all the post-bankruptcy (non-Project Azalea) A&P stores added.
- All the Haggen stores that were operating when Albertsons bought the rest of the company and converted back to their original brands should be added by now.
- The Haggen stores that were closed have NOT been all added yet. AFAIK, some of them still have not been reopened yet. The list is derived from the "Coupons In The News" listing of the converted Haggen stores to see if I missed any (and I did miss a lot). These will be added in the coming days.
- The stores that saw NO openings this year were the other United brands (Amigos and Market Street), Carrs, Super Saver, Lucky, Pavilions, and Star Market/Shaw's. Most of those are expected no shows anyway.
- It seems to be that the Southern California stores are mostly converting to Vons. I had heard a few WA/OR stores converted to Safeway but I haven't added those yet. On the other hand, a Las Vegas Vons-turned-Haggen was reopened as an Albertsons.
- Any moving Safeway stores in AZ appear to be on track for 2017.
- That "blizzard roof collapse" Safeway won't be covered here either for the same reason the ACME rebuilds were not.
- Haggen stores known to be not yet reopened: The Ashland OR Safeway on Siskiyou
- A bunch of the Haggen reopens that closed for months and reopened I don't have dates for. Renton, Burien, Springfield OR, all of these are hard to find and I had to make some educated guesses. Renton DID have a date.

Latest Updates:
- Done with the 11/11 auctions, plus added a Jewel-Osco I missed. Did the Rejected Leases turn out any stores for Albertsons that opened this year besides the LV one?

There is a Safeway opening today, 9/14/2016, in Walnut Creek, California. An old 50 year old Safeway across the street was demolished and a new one was built to replace it. The new location was where Safeway had some corporate level offices. The offices were bulldozed and a brand new Safeway was built on the land. This was planned by the original Safeway before Albertsons tookover. Safeway was going to make this a huge and spectacular Safeway because many Safeway executives lived nearby. The store has parking on the roof as well as a huge surface parking lot. There are giant elevators for shopping carts as well as huge staircases to the roof. The store features panoramic views of the entire valley and Mount Diablo.

It was so huge and expensive that Albertsons actually was getting cold feet about opening up the store. Construction was halted for a time. However, it eventually resumed and it is finally opening. This is one of the last big pieces of free land that Walnut Creek has developed. The new outdoor shopping center called The Orchards is a massive shopping center with park land, walking trails, stores, restaurants, and a gym. The new Safeway will probably put the old Nob Hill Foods across the street out of business as well as all of the other stores in the Nob Hill Shopping center.

I am eager to see what decor this new Safeway store will have. It was probably one of the last stores designed and planned by the original Safeway.

Are you able to guess on the square footage?

I am wondering if they will use the "Colorful Lifestyle" décor package used in new opens here in the Pacific Northwest or if they will go with the "Florida" décor?

I know of at least one Albertsons store that changed to Haggen then reverted back to Albertsons (17520 SR 9, Snohomish WA). I know the Monroe Albertsons also got converted to Haggen, but I'm not sure what happened to that one afterward since it's right next to another Safeway.

The new Safeway in Walnut Creek, California has the old Lifestyle decor with a few minor upgrades. The store is much brighter than previous versions of this decor. The store is lit with single rows of tube LED lights which make the store seem very bright inside. The floor is brown polished concrete. It looks very smooth and almost has a high quality granite look. It is very upscale compared to cheap warehouse style concrete floors. There is a Starbucks Cafe with a fireplace and very high quality sofa-like chairs.

The cash registers have a higher quality brown wood look. The health and beauty section by the pharmacy has high quality solid brown wood doors. It looks very upscale. Most of the refrigerated aisles are covered with clear plastic doors instead of being open.

Overall, I like the look of the store and the large number of windows that let sunlight into the store. The Produce department has many windows as well as the front checkout area.

Photos of the new store in Walnut Creek. It has the classic Lifestyle decor (but with brighter lighting):

That's not too big at all. The Randalls in Leander under construction is 59k square feet, and that was planned under Safeway, and Safeway generally has smaller stores than Albertsons. A shame since Albertsons used to push boundaries (and Safeway closed a lot of big stores, like 80k square feet Randalls or a 100k square feet Dominick's). (By the way, I updated the list)
