The Albertsons down in Durango will probably be the next Safeway conversion...there is an existing SWY in Cortezstorewanderer wrote:One Albertsons closing in Grand Junction, CO and the other converting to Safeway. What is interesting about this is the Grand Junction stores are part of the Intermountain Division (not Denver) so basically these are Albertsons in all but name but still being called Safeway.

I personally observed the banners up today at the Scottsdale store.
I haven't seen any press coverage of store closings but I assume (with no confirmation) that the following stores are also endangered (as there are Safeway stores either across the street (for the first 3 locations) or 1 mile away (for the store in Tucson):
8454 S. Power Road
Gilbert, AZ 85297
9243 E Baseline
Mesa, AZ 85212
14551 West Grand Ave
Surprise, AZ 85375
9595 E. Broadway
Tucson, AZ 85748
There is no sign of any store closing of the Via Linda / Frank Lloyd Wright Albertsons or Safeway in Scottsdale. Both stores do significant business and they'll probably keep both open as long as possible to prevent competition.

Re: Albertsons and Safeway Openings/Closings 2017
Durango is a Denver Division store, already has a Safeway look-a-like ad similar to Colorado Springs Albertsons. Pueblo Albertsons are also Denver Division but seem to be on an entirely different ad program than the rest of Denver. One of the Pueblo Albertsons is a former Max Foods and still configured as such; heavily catering to a hispanic customer base and it shows with the ad, despite the store having the Albertsons banner, it is really a different format.jamcool wrote:The Albertsons down in Durango will probably be the next Safeway conversion...there is an existing SWY in Cortezstorewanderer wrote:One Albertsons closing in Grand Junction, CO and the other converting to Safeway. Off topic but there is now an online ad for the two Utah Super Savers. Coupons, Just for You, Open Nature Lamb, and Value Corner center store items. What a confused ad. Those had pretty decent center store pricing in the past though...

The other Albertsons in Surprise- Bell Rd @ Loop 303-is in the process of closing. WinCo is across the street and there is a Safeway just to the West on Bell

Re: Albertsons and Safeway Openings/Closings 2017
That's really cool! It definitely has some unique decor (but Albertsons decor nonetheless). Kind of interesting that this store has managed to stay alive for years while differently-branded "Hispanic" store spin-offs by other supermarkets have either never expanded or crashed and burned. It would be a little curious if they rebranded this as Safeway, but seeing how inconsistent Safeway is store to store in many aspects, I suppose it would fit right in...storewanderer wrote:Durango is a Denver Division store, already has a Safeway look-a-like ad similar to Colorado Springs Albertsons. (On an off-topic note, I'm wondering if the two remaining SoCal Lucky stores they have left, one of which does have the original Lucky decor, will either close or rebrand to something else).

Re: Albertsons and Safeway Openings/Closings 2017
Another quiet closure to add to the list: Apparently the Albertsons at 377/North Tarrant Parkway in Watauga (north of Fort Worth) is in the process of closing. This store is an early 2000's Albertsons in a high-growth area of North Forth Worth, so demographics aren't an issue here. Although competition has heated up in recent years (including a Kroger Marketplace to the west), there is still no reason this store should be closing as it is located along a major thoroughfare with the only significant competition being Walmart and Kroger, along with a SuperTarget immediately to the south. The closure is likely due to mismanagement, more than anything else.
Also, of note, Albertsons previously closed another Watauga store in the mid-2000's, then later reopened the store in 2010 after a nearby Kroger and other grocers pulled out, leaving the neighborhood without a grocery store. That store is located at Rufe Snow Drive/Watauga Rd, and largely reopened due to some convincing on the city government's part.

Re: Albertsons and Safeway Openings/Closings 2017
The Watauga store started liquidation sales back in January, and I think that because it wasn't announced by Albertsons along with others, I'm betting it's a landlord issue. It's possible it's a Mandeville situation, where the store was nice and doing well, but the landlord had it evicted in favor of a Whole Foods and another store. Either way, Watauga is closing and will be added to the list.architect wrote:Another quiet closure to add to the list: Apparently the Albertsons at 377/North Tarrant Parkway in Watauga (north of Fort Worth) is in the process of closing. Re: Albertsons and Safeway Openings/Closings 2017
I haven;t even thought about that, but that scenario would make sense, particularly if another tenant is lined up for the space but they don't want Albertsons to reveal that "_____ is moving into this space, therefore we are closing our store. It is not due to performance." Also, the recent Lewisville store closure was only announced in a local newspaper, so maybe Albertsons is purposely avoiding making official store closing announcements (except when directly asked by a local media outlet) in order to avoid the perception that all of their stores are closing?pseudo3d wrote:The Watauga store started liquidation sales back in January, and I think that because it wasn't announced by Albertsons along with others, I'm betting it's a landlord issue. Re: Albertsons and Safeway Openings/Closings 2017
In an interesting twist on this closure, HEB has also acquired land at the Northwest corner of 377/North Tarrant Parkway. It seems that if HEB was planning to build there, Albertsons would be willing to stick around and try to compete for a bit, rather than shutting down before a competing store is even officially announced... A similar situation also happened with the Murphy Albertsons closure, which is just down the street from a potential HEB site at 544/McCreary.pseudo3d wrote:The Watauga store started liquidation sales back in January, and I think that because it wasn't announced by Albertsons along with others, I'm betting it's a landlord issue.
