Too bad to see an interesting store like this close. I don't think there is any new competition. So you do have to wonder after many, many decades, why is it finally being closed now?

The combined Safeway/Albertsons operation seems to really be in trouble.
One of the comments on the Acme Style posting (by an unknown person) suggested that the lease was ending and it hadn't done well for several years. So likely a good time to get out of it, since it's only suspected to get more costly to do a new lease, making it more of a losing operation.

There was a small independent down the street, and the lease was coming to an end. Here's the comment:
St Michaels gas a few problems that kept it from being profitable. The town has a very small off season population. The union insists on full department manager staffing year round. The saving graces of this store was that it had a liquor department, which was profitable. In past years they would eliminate the Deli Managers position in the off season and send that person and itgers to winter in the Easton Store and make the Meat Manager to run both departments. A long time store manager at this location would sell straight trucks of bottled water directly to the marina in town , plus other items This helped sales and profitability, with this labor free transaction. He moved in two years ago to Harris Teeter. This did not help their cause. Finally,There us an independent dent market to blocks up to this store that has a service meat case and a great Delli and a large independent Gauls on the outskirts of town.

Updated again but made the mistake of fixing some wording after clicking Submit, so to compensate there won't be an Edit 29. Edit 30 will probably be made in December when everything settles out unless they have one more trick up their sleeve. It was a year ago when Safeway announced they would purchase Andronico's...

Another ACME (former Pathmark) in New Jersey is closing for a net loss of 11 stores BUT we've got Monterey coming soon.

So for 2018 we've got 4001 Walnut Street (in Philadelphia assuming the judge won't rule in Fresh Grocer's favor), a Tom Thumb in Dallas (Cedar Springs Road, inside The Union), Georgetown TX, possibly Monterey if it doesn't reopen before year end (unlikely), Meridian, another one in Meridian (Firenze Plaza). Maybe Durant, OK, but from reading about it, it looks like it will be on more than just the dealership's land and they'll have to condemn other properties.

In 2019, there's 170 E. Kamehameha Avenue. in Hawaii and a few Tom Thumb/Market Street stores I've heard rumors about.

For 2018, there is another new Tom Thumb coming near downtown, inside the City Lights development near Deep Ellum. Also, a Tom Thumb is supposed to be opening in Heath during the third quarter of 2018, however, this project is still going through the city approval process so it may be delayed into 2019.

Made the final post for 2017. I intend to make a new thread for the next year, which I am preparing for.

There's also the Woodlawn Jewel-Osco planned for 2018.
