Re: Grocery chains in your area

Post by KingU8ol0Soopers »

Well, it's been about a year, so here are some updates for Colorado Springs, Colorado. Unlike the last time that I did this count, I'm counting all of the stores in the metropolitan area rather than just the ones within city limits.

1. Safeway (14) - One Safeway closed this year
2. King Soopers (Kroger) (10)
3. Walmart Supercenters (9)
4. Albertsons (Albertsons, LLC) (4)
5. Whole Foods (2)
6. Costco (2)
7. Sam's Club (2)
8. SuperTarget (2)
9. Save a Lot (1)
11. Sprout's Farmers Market (a former Sunflower Farmer's Market) (1)
10. Walmart Neighborhood Market (1) - More of these are currently being built

Despite loosing a store this year and not having a presence in the northern part of the city (where there was once a Safeway that has since closed and turned into a gym), Safeway is still the dominant store, in terms of location. The number of Walmart Neighborhood Markets is expected to grow this year since they are still in the process of building some of their stores. But other than that, everything has more or less stayed the same.

Phoenix is interesting, but here's the list:

The big 5 "traditional":
1.) Walmart (Neighborhood Market + Supercenter).
2.) Fry's (Food & Drug, Marketplace, Signature)
3.) Safeway
4.) Bashas
5.) Albertsons

The others:

- Fresh and Easy
- Trader Joe's
- Whole Foods Market
- Sprouts
- WinCo Foods
- Food City (Owned by Bashas)
- AJ's Fine Foods (Owned by Bashas)
- Super Target
- Grocery Outlet
- Costco
- Sam's Club
- Pro's Ranch Market
- Super L Ranch Market
- Asiana Market
- Lee Lee Oriental Market
- El Super

Some notes.

Fry's seems to have figured out to have a nice, high volume store base. I've never seen a Fry's with a mostly empty parking lot.

Walmart's new Neighborhood Markets are lacking service deli's (whereas the older ones had them).

Albertsons is an interesting animal. While LLC closed about 1/3 of the stores in the Phoenix area, the remaining stores are high volume and well stocked stores (many of which have been recently renovated). Albertsons also has recently increased its advertising in the area.

The stores Albertsons LLC has retained in Arizona and Colorado are good condition, well run, and medium to high volume. They are sitting on some garbage still in New Mexico. As for what was just purchased from Supervalu, there is a lot of work to do...

I think Frys has closed a couple of older stores in Mesa area.

Fry's has closed 3 stores in the semi-recent past.

Mesa: 825 W. University

Goodyear: 390 N. Litchfield Road

Phoenix: 1625 W Camelback Rd

The stated reason for these closures is that there was another Fry's store nearby.

For the Mesa location, there is the nearby larger, ex-Smith's at Alma School and Main St.

For the Goodyear location, there is the nearby larger, ex-Smith's at McDowell Rd. and Dysart Rd

For the Phoenix location, there is the nearby larger, ex-Smith's at 7th Ave and Camelback Rd

I believe that all 3 of these closures are more of the rationalization of locations from the merger of Fry's and Smith's in the Phoenix market. One of the stores (typically the smaller, older Fry's unit) was less profitable in Kroger's model than the larger, better located former Smith's unit.

Fry's hasn't done this with the ex-Smitty's that are as close (if not closer) to other Fry's locations.

In Scottsdale there is the recently renovated (with newly added fuel center) ex-Smitty's that is now a Fry's Marketplace (Via Linda and 90th St) that is 0.5 miles from the recently renovated ex-Smith's that is now a Fry's Signature (Shea and 90th St).

In Chander there is the "famous" intersection of Rural Rd and Ray Road which has the ex-Smitty's (Fry's Marketplace) on the NW corner and the pre-merger Fry's on the SE corner of the intersection.

I have to give Kudos to Albertsons LLC for keeping open the store at Tatum and Shea. That intersection has to be one of the most competitive intersections in the grocery industry in the entire state. On the NW corner there is a Trader Joe's and a Whole Foods market. On the SW corner there is Kroger's Arizona flagship store, the Fry's Signature Marketplace. Within 1 mile there is a Walmart Supercenter and a Sprouts (at Tatum and Cactus).

Yes, I know that the demographics in that area are probably some of the best in the valley (which is why it was chosen as the site of the flagship Fry's), but still if LLC wanted out of the supermarket business, I'm sure that location would be valuable to some other retailer (a la the Camelback and 16th St and Ahwatukee stores that became Sports Authorities).

A couple of minor updates here:

In Lafayette, Rouses Markets has opened two stores; one was a completely new build just south of town in Youngsville (which is a very nice store) and another replaced a store built by Weingarten in the late 70's that had last been a nightclub. Also, Albertsons closed one Lafayette store, and remodeled (thoroughly) at least three of the remaining 4 stores. Brookshire Grocery added a Super 1 Foods store in Carencro just north of Lafayette (which killed the local guy, thank goodness), and massively remodeled the two Lafayette stores, and completely gutted the Opelousas store and remade it into a true Super 1 Foods.

Generally, the rest of the state is pretty stagnant; one main point is that there are only three 'Division 1' Walmart stores remaining, in Vivian, Bogalusa and Franklin. These three stores, at least at this point, will not become Supercenters. As of this writing, the D1 store in New Roads is about to be replaced, if it hasn't already.

Shreveport/Bossier:
Kroger (4 stores: one greenhouse, one superstore, one acquisition and one Signature)
Brookshire's (7 stores)
Super 1 Foods (4 stores, owned by Brookshire)
County Market (3 stores, including one former Kroger greenhouse)
Walmart (5 supercenters)
Albertsons (LLC, 2 stores)
SuperTarget (1 store)
Piggly Wiggly, A&P and Safeway had significant presences here. All are now gone.

Alexandria/Pineville:
Kroger (1 signature)
Super 1 Foods (2 stores, including the original in Alexandria)
Walmart (3 supercenters)
Albertsons (LLC, 1 store)
A&P had a significant presence here, as did Piggly Wiggly. Kmart had a supercenter here. When it closed, there was an article in the paper that stated the supercenter's sales were the same as the retail store; thus the store actually lost business. This store closed before the others.

Lake Charles/Sulphur:
Kroger (4 stores: one greenhouse, one 80's store, one former Albertsons and one Family Center)
Albertsons (2 stores remaining)
Walmart (3 stores)
Market Basket TX (5 stores)
Brookshire Bros. (1 store)

Lafayette/Acadiana (Acadiana is the 9 parish section immediately around Lafayette):
Albertsons (5 stores)
Winn Dixie (2 stores in Lafayette, one each in Crowley, Rayne, New Iberia, Eunice and Breaux Bridge)
Walmart (10 Supercenters: 4 in Lafayette and one each in Crowley, New Iberia, Eunice, Breaux Bridge, Abbeville and Opelousas)
Super 1 Foods (2 stores in Lafayette and one each in New Iberia, Eunice, Opelousas and Abbeville. Opelousas is a former Winn-Dixie; Eunice and Abbeville are former Delchamps; New Iberia is a former Woolco/Walmart, and one Lafayette store is in a former Kmart.)
Piggly Wiggly (4 stores in Lafayette)
SuperTarget (1 store)
Kroger, A&P and National each had presences here, with Kroger Family Centers in Lafayette, New Iberia, and Morgan City. Kmart had a supercenter here.

Baton Rouge:
Winn Dixie (6 stores)
Albertsons (LLC, 7 stores, plus one in Hammond and one in Mandeville)
Piggly Wiggly (6 stores)
Walmart (10 stores in East Baton Rouge Parish alone, 3 Neighborhood Markets and 7 Supercenters)
SuperTarget (2 stores)
A&P closed its final two stores here in 2006. Kmart had a supercenter here.

Greater New Orleans:
Walmart (10 stores, 2 Neighborhood Markets and 8 Supercenters)
Winn Dixie (25 stores in communities around Lake Pontchartrain)
Numerous Independants surround New Orleans. A&P and National/Canal Villere/Real Superstore had their divisions close here in the last 15 years. Schwegmann Giant Supermarkets closed in 1999. Albertsons left in 2004.

Monroe:
Brookshires (4 stores)
Super 1 Foods (2 stores)
Walmart (2 stores)
Albertsons left here in the last year. Kmart had a supercenter here. Safeway had a significant presence here until 1987.

Super S wrote:In Portland & Southwest Washington:

The major players:

Safeway, which has had a longtime presence in the region, and is updating many of their stores.

Albertsons, which has also had a longtime presence but is neglecting a lot of their stores, and closing some.

WinCo, which is a growing chain and is adding new stores in the region.

Fred Meyer, a chain that started in Portland and is now owned by Kroger, which has been aggressively remodeling many of their stores.

QFC, a more upscale chain also owned by Kroger, which has actually closed a few Portland/Vancouver locations.

Haggen/TOP Foods. TOP closed their Kelso location in the early 2000's (now Safeway) and has no other presence in Southwest Washington. At least one Haggen store in Portland has closed.

Walmart, which is building two new supercenters but still has a relatively small presence in the region.

Costco, which is adding a few locations and just replaced a store in Warrenton, Oregon

The smaller players:

Target, which has expanded their grocery offerings but does not have a full-line grocery selection in this area.

Food 4 Less, with a couple stores in the Portland area, and I believe not affiliated with Kroger.

Thriftway, a regional chain of mostly independent stores that seems to be shrinking in size. The remaining ones are in smaller towns.

IGA, which is found in many smaller towns.

Grocery Outlet

Save A lot, which has a few stores in Portland/Vancouver

There may be a few others scattered about the region but I am not familiar with them.
I thought I would give an update:

Safeway seems to be stagnant. They still do ok but are slowing way down on store remodels and openings, and have closed a few older stores, including a Marina store in Portland on 82nd.

Albertsons has continued closing locations, and has been doing minimal remodeling at some locations. With the stores moving from Supervalu to LLC ownership, this chain will be interesting to watch the next couple years.

WinCo is doing very well and continues to grow.

Fred Meyer is doing well and is continually updating their stores. Remodels are happening more often under Kroger ownership.

QFC, also owned by Kroger, seems to do ok in the Seattle area, but has a relatively small number of locations in the Portland area. I have a mixed impression of the future of these stores, they could remain QFC, be renamed under a Fred Meyer banner (at least in Portland) or close altogether. A lot of locations in smaller towns have closed.

Haggen/TOP foods is really struggling. The rebranding of the remaining TOP stores to Haggen is happening very slowly, and some TOP stores have been closing. The future of the Portland area locations is up in the air.

Walmart is opening quite a few of the "Neighborhood Market" locations. One in Vancouver is about to open in part of a former WinCo store (Winco built a new store nearby), and another is proposed at the site of the recently demolished Fourth Plain Fred Meyer (which moved a few years ago) So far these are opening closer to large cities like Portland, Seattle etc.

Save-A-Lot has closed most, if not all, stores in this area.

Grocery Outlet is opening a few new locations.

This is what has happened in the Phoenix area as well. Safeway seems to have alienated a bit of its customer base by trying to go more upscale and while it works in certain areas, certain Safeway stores that were simply the "neighborhood" store in lower - middle class neighborhoods don't really fit the model anymore. Safeway is keeping some of them (at least in Phoenix) open for now if they get a minimum level of business but Walmart, Winco, and to some extent Fry's (a multi-formatted Kroger division that Kroger has positioned differently depending on the demographics of the area swerved) have really encroached upon the territory of some of the Safeways.

Depending on how much "dead weight" stores Supervalu got rid of, you could see some great improvement. LLC closed a number of stores (approximately 1/3 of the store count) of Albertsons in the Phoenix area between 2006-2009 but since then has stabilized the metro area's store count at 29 and has slowly been renovating the stores. The LLC stores here in Phoenix sound nothing like I've read people describe the Supvervalu stores (in terms of poor condition and neglect).

My home town, Bryan-College Station has the following, not including drug, carnicerias, or dollar stores:

H-E-B (4) - all but one moved from older Pantry stores

Sam's Club (1)
BCS Asian Market* (1) - originally built as the grocery store adjacent to early '70s Kmart
* independent
** no longer physically a Greenhouse

5 Years Ago:

Walmart Supercenter (2) - one expanded from a regular Wal-Mart
Target (2)
Village Foods* (1)
Sam's Club (1)
BCS Asian Market* (1) - originally built as the grocery store adjacent to early '70s Kmart
Super Canasta (1)- other former AppleTree

10 Years Ago:
H-E-B (3) - two moved from older Pantry stores, one still a Pantry sized store

Albertsons (3)
Walmart Supercenter (1) - the other Wal-Mart hadn't expanded yet

Cub Foods (owned by Supervalu)
Rainbow (owned by Roundys)
Lunds and Byerlys (Upscale chains)
Supertarget ( has a big presence)
Walmart (starting to build and expand to supercenters
Kowalskis/festival (smaller chain)

An Update on the grocery scene in Fargo
Hornbacher's is still the dominant leader and just opened a new store in Moorhead and acquired a store in Grand Forks 60 miles north of Fargo

Cash Wise has been on a massive expansion spree mostly in the oil boom area in Western North Dakota
But recently opened up a store in West Fargo

Sun Mart was rebranded to Family Fare due to the merger of Spartan and Nash-Finch

As for the Twin cities

Roundy's left the market and SuperValu acquired a few
And some Became Cub Foods and the others closed

Probably the biggest news is Hy-Vee entering the market
They just opened 2 stores and plans for 15 more in the next 3 years
