Pantry Essentials; Dueling store brands @ Vons

A trip to Vons this evening offered something interesting. Safeway is now adding a second store brand in the dairy... Pantry Essentials items sold alongside Lucerne offer lower prices to some items (such as milk) that would seem to be of the same quality and origin. An odd choice. Pantry Essentials is even labelled as coming from Lucerne Foods.

Nothing new here. Fred Meyer has been doing this for a long time, the Fred Meyer brand of milk as well as the less expensive Mountain Dairy brand comes from the same place, and quality seems the same. Albertsons used to also do this with the Albertsons and Janet Lee brands as well.
