CVS New Decor and New Prepared Foods To Go

Post by Alpha8472 »

I have just seen cell phone photos of a newly remodeled CVS store somewhere in Minnesota. The new CVS decor is based on the new CVS decor installed in former Longs Drugs stores. The department signs are identical. The store features 4 self-checkout machines at the front of the store next to the main checkout counter. The self-checkout machines have 4 Longs Drugs style circular checkstand lights! This is amazing! A Longs Drugs feature is now being used as part of the new CVS decor.

The store also features wood paneling on the walls near the refrigerated section. It gives the store an upscale look. It reminds me of how Longs Drugs used to use wood paneling in parts of their stores. The pharmacy also has pharmacy counters and cubicles that are made of wood. These are just like what Longs Drugs used to use. There is also a Grab and Go section. It features fresh fruit just like Longs used to sell. Longs Drugs used to have a similar salad and prepared foods section.

CVS has taken some of the features of Longs Drugs and has added it to their new store model.

Could we see a return to Longs within the next decade a la Lucky/Albertsons?

The December version of the CVS employee magazine detailed what this new decor is called. It is called the "Urban Prototype." The other prototype is the "Pharmacy Dominant" prototype.

They did studies and realized that some stores get 80% of their sales from the pharmacy and 20% from the rest of the store. These are pharmacy dominant stores. A pharmacy dominant prototype will be discussed by CVS later in 2011. Pharmacy dominant stores are found in areas where there are many other stores that compete with CVS.

In studies, CVS found that stores in urban areas were used as a main place to buy food and everyday supplies because those areas usually lack grocery stores. In the "Urban Prototype" they added a "To Go Foods" section with salads, grab and go foods, and produce. They also took out many checkouts and added self-checkout units. They also added round checkstand lights to the self checkout units. These are the round checkstand lights that Longs Drugs used to use before they were taken over by CVS. They also added wood paneling to the walls of parts of the store as well as wood flooring in parts of the store. Longs Drugs used to have wooden flooring in parts of their stores.

CVS also introduced new signs with the Urban Prototype and Pharmacy Dominant Prototype. These signs first appeared on former Longs Drugs stores that were remodeled by CVS.

CVS has a prototype store at their headquarters that is stocked like a real CVS store, but only used for planning new decor changes. The CVS prototype store at CVS headquarters also features a slightly different style of carpeting. The carpet is mostly dark gray with winding walkways of black carpet curving through the stores.
