Jackson, Wyoming, Walgreen's

Post by kr.abs.swy »

Walgreen's fought for years and years to be able to build a new store in Jackson, Wyoming.

In January 2014, Walgreen's finally managed to open a new store on the main drag through town. This store was just down the street from the local drug store, Stone Drug. A vocal contingent of locals rallied in support of Stone Drug (even though many locals have no problem filling prescriptions at the local Albertsons, Smith's or Kmart).

In April 2014, Walgreen's closed -- in theory, temporarily -- because of a landslide in the hill above the store. The site for the Walgreen's (and some other businesses along this section of the highway) had been partially carved out of the hill, and this was the year the hill chose to rebel. Houses were destroyed, a popular restaurant was closed temporarily, the Walgreen's parking lot was buckled severely, people couldn't get to their homes ... for the people who lost their houses, the event was simply tragic. http://trib.com/news/state-and-regional ... 97968.html

For the past year, Walgreen's seemed to expect to eventually reopen the store, but the weeks dragged into months and the store never reopened. On November 20, 2014 (per the warranty deed) Walgreen's purchased the store from its former landlord.

But last week, Walgreen's announced that the store won't reopen, after all. http://www.jhnewsandguide.com/jackson_h ... fdff5.html

I would love to know what the thought process was in Walgreen's deciding to purchase this property when it was uncertain whether the store would be able to open ...

That Walgreens looked like it was a deathtrap. Who carves a big space out of a huge mountainside and expects it to simply be held in place by a little wall?

Walgreens is an awful pharmacy chain. Their prices are high, and their pharmacies are understaffed. Literally, you get put on telephone hold for half an hour. It is Walgreens' goal to put other pharmacies out of business. They are like the Walmart of drug store chains, except that Walgreens charges high prices. At least Walmart has good prices. Walgreens gouges you and wants to take over the world at the same time. Walgreens wants to have stores on practically every busy street corner in order to stomp out the competition. I guess karma bit Walgreens.

Walgreens would not knowingly purchase a doomed and useless plot of land. Perhaps there was some sort of legal contract where Walgreens was forced into purchasing the property.
