Wal-Mart sued for selling fake craft beer

Walmart announced last year that it had begun selling its own line of craft beers, claiming it was ”working in ‘collaboration’ with Trouble Brewing to brew four styles of craft beer.” Which would be a smart business move, except for the part where “Trouble Brewing” doesn’t actually exist. According to government filings, the beer is made by WX Brands from a location in Costa Rica, where a company named “Genesee Brewing” makes beer identified as “cheap college-party staples.” USA Today, throwing the kind of shade normally reserved for drag competitions, notes one taste-tester for Walmart’s phony craft beer described the flavor as “good for flip cup.”

Bonus tagline: “Walmart—we figured out how to make lettuce give you diabetes!”

Wal Mart has got to stop getting involved in this sort of thing... like walking into a fire.

Walmart selling "its own line of craft beers" kind of misses the point of craft brewing in the first place. They're supposed to be mostly local, and finding a good one out of state is like a treasure hunt. If they're trying to make the food department more "upscale", they could start by not over-merchandising their store brand and introducing some of the better items they only have at Sam's Club, for starters.

Of course, this absurd--they are so locked into a centralized way of doing things and so oblivious as to how they can attract a slightly better off customer into their stores, they'll do something as boneheaded as this. Alcohol is a heavily regulated business and that may be why house brand beer disappeared a long time ago from most chains.

Trader Joe's has decent house brand beer. However, most of their store is made up of house brands.

Walmart's niche is name brands at low prices. Yes, they have decent house brand items, but their bread and butter is name brands.

Why they tried to do this with beer is beyond me.
