Well, they certainly subscribe to the same pricing strategy, which is "inflate the price so you can put it on sale for more than Macy's and Target sell it for." Case in point: Pyrex mixing bowls. Macy's sells them for ~$39 and they are almost perpetually on sale for $25, sometimes less. Target sells them for $19, but never seems to have them. Penney's sells them for $50! Ended getting them at Fry's for $15.99 on special. Kohl's does the same thing. The difference between the two is Kohl's stores are generally well-kept and Penney's are usually not.storewanderer wrote:...Maybe in the end JCP and Kohls can merge.

Re: JCPenney announces closures of 130-140 stores
There would indeed be mega-alerts at the SEC for a merger between the two. They attract a similar demographic. JCP, however, has catalogs. And that allows them to carry things others do not. Kohls has no extended sizes for men, limited housewares, and no appliances. While most of their stores could probably be retrofitted, they would all be too close to allow a merger, as both have significant presences everywhere they operate.storewanderer wrote:Maybe in the end JCP and Kohls can merge.

Re: JCPenney announces closures of 130-140 stores
While JCPenney does still have catalogs, they are far less prevalent than they used to be, and they no longer have dedicated catalog desks in their stores. And Kohl's has recently started to add some extended sizes for men in their stores (at least in my area), and they carry a lot more on their online site, just as JCPenney does. And I'm not sure I'd consider Kohl's housewares department to be "limited." They have quite a few small appliances, extended selections of cookware, tools, etc., in some cases more than JCPenney.JCP, however, has catalogs. And that allows them to carry things others do not. Kohls has no extended sizes for men, limited housewares, and no appliances.

That's a nationwide initiative. All of the major cities in Louisiana have these as well.jamcool wrote:In Phoenix JCP has installed Empire Today flooring showrooms in a few of their stores

Re: Morningstar lists 39 JCPenney stores "at risk" of closure
While third party lists can sometimes contain good data, unless they come directly from the source, I wouldn't trust them. JCP has long kept many surprise stores open that we wouldn't think they'd want to run. Most of their stores need work. Don't bank on any list until it comes from them.cathandler wrote:http://www.businessinsider.com/jcpenney ... ing-2017-3

Yeah, I'm not too sure about this list, especially the couple stores on there in the Philadelphia suburbs. JCP doesn't have an enormous presence in this region, and there are already two locations that have been confirmed to be closing. I'm not sure why these lists keep picking on this mall ('Montgomery Mall, North Wales, Pennsylvania') but the Macy's in this mall was on one of these suspected closing lists too and it didn't happen, and the JCPenney always seems plenty busy to me, ditto with Oxford Valley Mall. I'm not familiar with the Lehigh Valley mall but a few reviews indicate that it is generally a busy store, and a company spokesman said in January said there was no plans to close this location.

I was about to add the same thing, this smells of the pre-release Macy's list - how well did it correlate to their actual closures?mbz321 wrote:wnetmacman wrote:cathandler wrote:http://www.businessinsider.com/jcpenney ... ing-2017-3

At a glance, I looked up a few of these malls that struck my interest and I can't really believe they'd close the stores in a few of them; maybe just try to leverage the landlord on a better rent deal. For example, Lubbock, Texas is fairly isolated so if you closed there you basically are giving up any customer base at all and Macy's doesn't even exist in that part of Texas.

Re: Morningstar lists 39 JCPenney stores "at risk" of closure
The list is based on credit card sales data. They don't say if it reflects volume or something like sales/square foot. Some fairly weak stores I can think of didn't make the list, while at least one store with decent floor traffic (Wheaton) does. The store that seemed off-base to me has a lot of immigrant customers and I wouldn't be surprised if more of them pay with cash than credit. Many are small town malls which may not need to generate as much volume (absolute or by square footage) in order to make money. Still, small town malls seem to be dying off unless they're really far from sizable regional malls and I wouldn't be surprised if they make up a large proportion of the stores they sell.
JCP has exited viable malls where they didn't really fit (upscale malls like Perimeter in Atlanta) and perhaps had a landlord who wanted to repurpose the space for a more upscale tenant (as happened at Perimeter).
