4 Kentucky Walmart stores to close

Interesting development. Walmart seems to be quietly whittling down its excess brick and mortar stores after the rapid expansion from 1990 - 2015.

Three of the four are Neighborhood Market stores. The fourth is an oversized Division 1 store that is recognized as a Supercenter, but it doesn't have all the cooler equipment of one, and from discussions I've seen elsewhere, it's just excess store.

Both of the large stores closing appear to have had cosmetic work inside in the past few years. It seems like with Wal Mart, the condition of the store does not necessarily mean much of anything when it comes to selecting a location for closure. They do not seem to let stores "run down" before doing these operational closures like some chains do.

Conversely, I know of some Wal Marts in rural NorCal that were waiting on approval for replacement Supercenters for years (maybe even a decade) where the condition of the old store was allowed to run down pretty badly...

Walmart often does remodels to see if they can improve sales. If the sales do not improve enough, those stores still can close. The decision to close is complicated, but a large part is shoplifting and shrink. If there is a lot of shoplifting and shrink, they will close a store that doesn't meet sales goals. Stores that were busy still closed due to shoplifting.
