New Skippers location (update: closed 2019)

Post by Super S »

I recently learned that Skippers is coming back to Longview, Washington. The previous location, on Ocean Beach Highway, was a number of things over the years. Originally Skippers, it then became New York Bagels, then Atomic Burrito, then a second stint as a Skippers. After Skippers left the second time, it briefly became some kind of payday loan place which did not survive long, and is currently a beauty salon. Skippers also at one time had a location in the food court not far away at Kelso's dying Three Rivers Mall.

The new location is interesting. It is a strip-mall type of building in front of a two-year-old Walmart store. It was built not long after Walmart, but has sat vacant the whole time. It appears that Skippers is taking up one half of the building. For what it's worth, there are few restaurants in the vicinity with the exception of the Subway inside the Walmart. However, the proximity to Longview's mills could also potentially bring people in on their lunch breaks. I am curious how the inside of this location will look. Since the inside was previously an incomplete, unfinished building, it will be essentially a brand new unit, the first in many years. Personally, I am looking forward to the return, and to see how this run as a Skippers goes.

It's never been quite clear to me what happened with Skippers after the chain went under. As far as I can tell, a few locations hung on as independents and eventually reformed into some sort of chain under new ownership.

Oh, and looking at the Skippers website, there's a "Coming soon" for a new Bellevue location, as well as one in Silverdale. No details (not even an address) aside from an estimated opening date of August 2013. In the meantime, I do still visit the one in Renton every so often. It's basically a completely unremodeled old-style Skippers, and seems to be basically the same as it has been.

Also, if you look at the Skipper's Facebook page, they've got a number of pictures of the completely remodeled Silverdale location up now if you're looking for some idea of what a new one might look like.

I checked that out. That actually looks pretty nice. The last Skippers I have seen that has been somewhat recently remodeled was the Centralia/Chehalis location, which flooded a few years back, and had tables that looked like they came from another fast food restaurant. I have visited a couple of Skippers in Portland and Vancouver, and the food was good but the locations are in dire need of interior remodels.

I also noticed that the current logo is an updated version of the old logo, and in my opinion, looks much better than the logos Skippers has used the past few years.

Speaking of newer Skippers, there is a Skippers in Spokane that I believe was a old Denny's building. It is on North Division across from Northtown Mall. Here are a couple of links for it:

The Division street Skippers is also a full service restaurant, which is a first for Skippers.

Their menu looks tasty, but I'm curious why they skipped California? California lacks fast food seafood restaurants. We have Long John Silver's, but those are few and far between. I would eat at Skipper's if they were in CA.

Skipper's has really only been a Washington state operation. I suppose they never got large enough to break the regional barrier.

I know they once had a much wider reach than they do now. At one point, I recall there being several locations in the Albuquerque metro area, for example.

Skipper's once had several locations in Boise, Idaho. We ate there quite a bit when we lived there.

They had one in Reno and one in Sparks, NV in the late 80's or early 90's.

I think I've seen their buildings in California. Something along Gray Ave. in Yuba City comes to mind immediately.

Fast seafood seems to be tough out west. It isn't easy to find a freestanding Long John Silvers in Nevada or California.
