Westfield malls cutting hours?

Westfield malls cutting hours?

Postby Super S » October 16th, 2009, 3:43 pm

I was in the Westfield Shoppingtown in Vancouver, WA earlier today, and noticed the mall hours, which were 10-9 on weekdays, have now changed to 10:30 AM to 8:30 PM weekdays. Is this something Westfield is doing in a lot of their malls? Although there is still a vacant Mervyn's space, the rest of the mall seems to be doing ok.

A reduction in hours has happened at many other Westfield Malls. It is a slight change, but I assume it is just due to the Fall season. When it gets darker, people just don't shop as late anymore. Fewer hours means less labor cost.

Not all of the Westfield Malls have those exact hours. There are some busy malls that are still open until 9PM on weeknights, however the 10:30AM opening time is the same.

I never noticed the change in hours for fall in past years though. I was wondering if it was Westfield's decision or if it was brought on by tenants who were not doing enough business. It would be a good move for Westfield though if it means keeping tenants.
