I was sure one of those would've been "excess" (probably is, but on Kroger's side) in regards to the Seessel's/Schnucks purchase in 2011. Either way, along with Brownwood and Peoria, all the sudden closure news of Kroger stores across the country is a bit unusual. Yes, I know it's only six stores, but it's atypical for Kroger. The usual play is keep adding new stores and then quietly slough off the older stores, with it only getting announced if it was a major neighborhood anchor (for the Houston Division, only the Southwest Parkway store in College Station and the OST store in Houston got real coverage).

Kroger #288, Southgate Center, 1977 South Third Street, Memphis, Tennessee 38109-7713
Kroger #413, 2269 Lamar Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee 38114-6656
Kroger #431, Clarksdale Commons, 870 South State Street, Clarksdale, Mississippi 38614-4804

Kroger #288 should be among the oldest Kroger store operating in The Kroger Company's Delta Division.

Bizjournals says that the Third Street location opened in the late 1960s.
The Third Street location, which opened in 1969, currently employs about 65 people. There is a Save-A-Lot located a block away from that Kroger.
It also says that the Clarksdale store opened in 1942 but the size and location of the store, a fairly typical early 1980s Greenhouse, suggests that number is off by 40 years (it's possible they'll go back and change it--archived version here)
The Clarksdale location, which opened in 1942, currently employs 100 people. The nearest grocery store is a Walmart located less than a mile away, and the nearest Kroger is located 35 miles away, in Cleveland, Mississippi.

Kroger #288 has not changed much from the outside.

Kroger #431 opened in 1987. It could have replaced an older store.

I believe Kroger is referring to the initial date these stores opened, not the date they occupied their current location. You're correct in saying that Clarksdale isn't a 40's store; it's a greenhouse, as is Memphis on Lamar. The Southgate store is original to the timeframe though.
