Part of the Delhaize/Ahold merger. I presume it will reopen as ACME?

From the article:
"While Safeway, A&P and Acme have faded from the Salisbury scene, Salisbury’s Giant has remained a local consumer institution."
After your formats (both of them) already failed in a market, why try again? They have got to do something different this time...

Not necessarily. ACME bought back A&P's store in New Providence, which had been a 1968 ACME that really deteriorated before closing in 2006, they had many more North Jersey stores that were closed in the 1970s and many later afterwards, and they re-entered New York state for the first time since the 1990s.storewanderer wrote:From the article:

Albertson's (Safeway) Eastern and Acme divisions have overlap in Maryland. Acme has more stores closer to the Atlantic Ocean.

Generally, the areas where Safeway and ACME do overlap Safeway tends to be smaller and more dated (Easton MD, Wilmington DE, Rehoboth Beach) than the ACME stores. Their leases are probably going to run out, or if they are up for remodeling, switching to ACME stores.Knight wrote:Albertson's (Safeway) Eastern and Acme divisions have overlap in Maryland. Besides, this wouldn't be the first time ACME has moved into a Giant-Landover store.

May not be the first time recently, since both brands years ago had stores up into NY state, long closed and then reopened Acmes with the purchase of A&P locations last year.storewanderer wrote:From the article:

Re: Giant in Salisbury, MD sold to Albertsons
We will see how it goes. Giant runs very high volume stores so they probably figure even if they lose half of the business it will be an above average Acme. It also sounds like they will keep the employees/union agreement so hopefully that will help hold things together. Giant in my view (MD) wasn't a great operator but had impressively high volume stores.
