Acme president appointed to head Safeway East

Post by cathandler »

At least one analyst thinks this could lead to Safeway East moving to self-distribution

Not to sound rude, but hasn't this been true since a year or two when they started operating their own distribution center after C&S threatened to close it?

Mixing management of Acme and Safeway East is not a good idea. Philly and DC/MD are VERY different markets (as Safeway learned with Genuardi's)... the go-to market strategies of Acme are quite different from those of Safeway.

Well we will see how this goes.

What exactly is Albertsons attempting to do here? Turn Safeway into Acme? Acme into Safeway? Combine the two? As others have said none of those seem like a good idea. Ask Ahold about their experiences when they combined Giant-MD with Stop and Shop...

As a President of a division he should have the business skills to adapt to different markets. I hope that would be a minimum requirement of all Albertson's division heads.

From what I've heard, ACME has suffered some from Safeway cross-pollination in terms of product mix, but this arrangement sets all sorts of bells off. I doubt that Safeway will become ACME or vice versa (in product mix and presentation, not name), but this seems like a prelude to merging Eastern and ACME into one division, presumably to save costs. It doesn't mean that it will be a disaster like Stop & Shop/Giant-Landover as there will almost certainly be sub-divisions like how South has DFW, Louisiana, and Houston, nor will it be quite as large. Safeway had 127 stores in Eastern as of March 2015, though I believe more stores have closed than opened, while ACME has 179 as of last October, which again, has lost a few more stores than gained, putting the store count of the theoretical ACME/Eastern division as about 300 stores, less than SoCal's 350 and definitely less than the 400+ stores of Stop & Shop/Giant-MD.

There are thousands of possible scenarios. But obviously Albertson's management thinks that he can deliver results to the bottom line. That's all it is about at the end of the day.

From information that is available easily to all of us online there really doesn't seem to be a good reason to appoint the head of Acme run Safeway's Eastern Division. But being as that Albertson's is a privately held company we are not privy to all the financial details about each division and have to assume they know what they are doing.

There seems to be a lot of moving and shaking going on in the divisions. In the last week or so (including today), the heads of SoCal and Southwest switched places (putting Lori Raya, a Safeway person, in charge of SW) and Intermountain's president is heading NorCal (the article mentions that Brad Street was a district manager at Albertsons' Houston and NorCal divisions, both of which ended up being shuttered prior to the merger).

Jim Perkins was also head of NorCal for a brief period before the company dissolved, but someone else was in charge of NorCal at the time the company dissolved. I heard positive things back then from NorCal people about him. I think by the time he was there the division was already too damaged to repair.

Lots of movements at Kroger on the Division President front lately too, though in their case it is retirement after retirement, not just having people trade locations with one another.

Self distribution should be a goal for all Albertson's divisions.
