This past Sunday was the last day of opperation for Three former high volume Genuardi
stores. Chesterbrook, Concordville, and Newtown Square PA. Concordvile is only six miles north of the rebranded namans road, Wilmington De, Safeway ( Originaly a Genuardis) . Delaware has no sales tax.
Chesterbrook a store that is about twenty years old is part of a self contained community.
Walmart has a Supercenter in King Of Prussia about Five minutes away.
What has really killed Genuardis has been the way that Safeway came in and destroyed everything that made Genuardis special. Itailian specialties, great service, superior produce and meats gone.
In stead the consumer got a Kelly Green colored Safeway. Same distribution, same high
prices, something called Safeway selecto itailian Delli, good meat( but not the superior grade that Genuardis carried) poor service and the same ad that Safeway runs in Delaware with the same non competitive prices.
The stores look old beyond their years because of little or no maintenance and because it costs money to be clean. They don!t even have a union to Blame. Just clueless management that
make the Super Valu boys look like a cross between Sam Walton, Huntington Hartford and J.C, Penny in their prime.
