Stater Bros. Bellflower Closing

Post by CalItalian »

No article. I got this from a Southern California coupon group on Facebook I belong to. Closing mid-March. HABA and specialty food items are the first to go, 50% off. Large store adjacent to the 91 freeway. This is the location https://www.yelp.com/biz/stater-bros-ma ... llflower-2

Awful lot of mileage out of that old Lucky interior there... doesn't look bad... almost looks like they've made some effort at maintaining it.

What is this store exactly? It looks very oddly sized and to have an odd, odd depth.

Is this an old Gemco?

So I guess Lucky downsized it and reopened after Gemco (half of the building, including the northwest part, has been turned into a strip mall). I wonder if they opened out of coincidence or if they still had a stake in the property. Either way, a bit of research says that it was divested to Stater Bros. in 1999 as part of the ASC/Albertsons merger.

Lucky reopened a former Gemco in Culver City (Messmer St.) adjacent to the 405 freeway. It was a Lucky-Sav-on combo for many years (they had an open indoor doorway between the two). When CVS took over Sav-on, they closed that doorway. It was an Albertsons for many years (never remodeled after Lucky) and had very little business. CVS stayed open for almost 2 years after Albertsons closed their store down. They moved to a new shopping center in Playa Vista. Recently, they reopened the former Gemco as an auto-mall with multiple new car dealerships and service center under one huge Gemco roof.
