Progressive Grocers Top 50 U.S. grocers 2018

Post by klkla »

This is by sales. I stumbled on this today. It was published back in May.

It's amazing to see how much has changed in the industry.

1 - Walmart Inc. $159,809,000,000
2 - The Kroger Co. $79,240,200,000
3 - Albertsons Cos. Inc. $61,261,200,000
4 - Ahold Delhaize USA $46,119,320,000
5 - Publix Super Markets Inc. $28,535,000,000
6 - H.E. Butt Grocery Co. $16,451,500,000
7 - Wakefern Food Corp. (*Aggregate of ShopRite, Price Rite and The Fresh Grocer banners) $16,300,000,000
8 - Amazon (as Whole Foods Market) $15,655,900,000
9 - Aldi Inc. $14,664,780,000
10 - Trader Joe's Co. $13,000,000,000

My observations:
1-4 I'm not surprised
5-6 I'm impressed. I remember looking at this list many years ago when there were many regional grocery chains in the U.S. Few of them are independent any more. Publix and H.E.B. have really thrived.
9-10 I'm surprised and impressed.

Do these figures include fuel sales? Does 4 even operate fuel stations I know 5 doesn't operate fuel stations...

No idea if that is included, but #4 (at least the Ahold side as Stop & Shop up this way) does have some. Thinking their other branches may as well.
None of the Delhaize side (Hannaford) around here have them, nor do I remember seeing any at the Food Lion locations I've seen.

#7 (ShopRite) also does have a couple fuel stations up here in the Albany (NY) area - not sure if those are the only ones they run or not since it would likely be harder to do so in their main (NJ) market with rules and required full service.

I don't know the answer to that. I don't think it would change the big picture too much, though.

Something has to be up. Just for fun, I divided the sales by store count. Kroger beat out Albertsons, of course (expected) but Ahold Delhaize and Publix scored lower, which indicates that by average store sales there are probably a number of loser stores that they're holding onto--Ahold Delhaize obviously has Food Lion and dare say that Publix has a number of marginal (if not unprofitable) stores that they're using for market share reasons. When it came to H-E-B the number I found was 340 (I thought it was closer to 400 but okay), and plugging in the numbers meant that H-E-B smoked everyone higher by a huge margin (rather than $20-28 million, $48 million). That's not outside the realm of possibility since almost H-E-B has a good (if not packed out) crowd in the parking lot but I find it unbelievable that they're almost twice as profitable than any competitor in the market, except for Wakefern which is probably even higher. Is this right...?

Publix runs a lot of stores (maybe even most of their stores) in the 40,000 square foot range that are not very high volume. I am not surprised to see them less productive than some of the others. I doubt the stores are unprofitable, given Publix's pricing, labor model, the limited store hours (close at 10 PM) and the small perimeter departments they have.

Honestly, this list is garbage by not including stores like Costco (grocery only sales would place it at #2 or #3), BJ's ($12-15 billion range), Target, (about $15 billion in grocery sales). The world has changed and the idea that these are not where people are buying groceries is ridiculous yet Walmart is on the list.

I wouldn't say 'garbage' but there is validity to your main point.

WalMart's annual U.S. sales are are $318 Billion. The article refers to their grocery sales of $159 Billion so that is a fair representation as it is 50% of sales.

Target has not been expanding the SuperTarget format for years. They reported total sales of $71 Billion last year. Assuming the $15 billion figure quoted is correct that would be about 20% of sales which seems high considering most of their stores only have a small selection of groceries.

The comparison with Costco and BJ's would be difficult because a large portion of their sales are to businesses rather than consumers.
