Radio Shack to close 1,100 stores

I don't suppose this comes as much of a surprise really. I have no idea how the place has managed to stay in business for so long.

Apparently the store in the picture with that article was really having trouble - the broken door, window and the guy in what looks like a bulletproof vest? Maybe the people at the Edge MMA (Mixed Martial Arts, I assume) next door got out of control :)

Of course, even after closing that many stores, they'll still have around 4,000 - which is quite a big number for any chain.

Radio Shack is stuck in the past. There was a chance a while back that Radio Shack could survive by selling cell phones and related items. However, that can't save them now. The prices at Radio Shack are high and there really isn't any reason for most people to need to go to Radio Shack. Many items at Radio Shack can be found at your local Target, Walmart, or Best Buy.

Perhaps the reason why some people still feel nostalgic about Radio Shack is that at one time you could find interesting items there such as radio controlled toys, radio parts, etc. About 30 years ago there were not as many stores such as Best Buy. Radio Shack was the only place to get some types of electronics.

Radio Shack has so many stores, that it sort of is like a convenience store for electronics. The prices are high, but rather than traveling a long distance to Best Buy you can get what you need from Radio Shack.

Of course with so many locations, some Radio Shacks are found in rough neighborhoods. The Home Depot near my workplace actually has an armed guard with a gun. Although, one time I heard him on his radio panicking since he dropped his gun somewhere and lost it. This does not give me confidence in most chain store security guards.

A little off topic, but I found this fascinating: The Smartphone Has Effectively Replaced All The Technology Offered In This 1991 Radio Shack Ad http://consumerist.com/2014/01/17/the-s ... -shack-ad/

Radio Shack is the only place nearby where I can pick up electronic components (i.e. resistors, transistors, etc.). The store that they're closing nearest to me is a larger stand-alone store located in the parking lot of shopping center that usually has a much better inventory of this type of thing than stores inside of shopping malls or strip malls.
