Albertsons-Safeway Merger effect on Seattle?

Post by klkla »

I was looking at market share data for the major cities where both Albertsons and Safeway currently both operate and was interested in everyone's opinion on what they think the market will look like after the merger. Which brand name will be kept? How many stores will be divested? E.T.C.

This thread is for the Seattle area.

Current market share:
#1 - fred Meyer/QFC (Kroger) 24.2%
#2 - Safeway 21.7%
#3 - Costco 12.2%
#4 - Albertsons 6.0%
#5 - Walmart 5.4%

Combined market share 27.7%

Like Portland, I expect that the Safeway name will be kept due to the fact that they have more locations, and that Albertsons has been suffering from many of the same issues in Seattle as they have in Portland.
