I heard from friends who work at Walmart that Walmart employees are receiving computer based training to look out for tampered credit card readers. Walmart keeps their credit card readers updated, but even with relatively new credit card readers employees still need to look out for tampered readers.
The computer based training tells employees to look out for skimmers attached to credit card readers as well as to look out for extra wires attached to the readers. Also employees are being told to look out for miniature cameras being mounted nearby that can capture people typing in their PINs. In addition, they are also being informed to look out for people who claim to be repairing credit card readers. Imposters are everywhere. People can just walk in off the street and claim to be repair technicians. The real technicians dress in plain clothes just like everyone else and are usually contracted employees employed by another company such as NCR.
I do not know if other retail chains are also getting their employees to check for card skimmers and look out for tampered credit card readers. It seems like even the newest credit card readers can be hacked or altered.

Wal Mart is very good about having their card readers secured/bolted into the counter. I am guessing at this point they are just trying not to fall victim to a breach similar to many other large and small retailers.

Re: Walmart Employees Receiving Training On Credit Card Read
The ones that concern me right now are Sears and others that are now using ipads to ring up sales. The problem is that the card readers are attached to the ipad which isn't bolted to anything. It wouldn't be too hard for somebody to walk in with a lookalike ipad and set it on a counter for an employee to grab. Or in the case of some Sears stores where I have seen entire groups of registers unattended, with ipads sitting in the open, where somebody could easily grab one and run off. If the staffing levels of the Sears stores I have recently visited are any indication, there might not be enough employees to watch everything.

Maybe they figure no one would want to steal their stuff - probably not enough numbers to be worthwhileSuper S wrote:The ones that concern me right now are Sears and others that are now using ipads to ring up sales.
