Pretty interesting that both Rite Aid and CVS failed at that very busy intersection. Kind of makes me wonder how that Safeway is doing. I thought it did fine.

Also kind of funny both Rite Aid and CVS are still open pretty close together over on Foothills but that must just be a better location.

CVS really needs to do either do major remodels of these Longs Stores or close them. Around Reno they've gone and done the re-carpet/repaint in the past year or two on all of them. Those freshen them up for a year or so then they go back to their grungy smelly old Longs-self.
At the time highland crossing(parent center)was built(circa 2000),the unwritten rule prohibiting a supermarket pharmacy in a center with a chain drugstore was already out the window(as early as the late 1980's new Bel Air locations with in-store pharmacies were already sharing centers with Payless or Long's locations). It appears that the Safeway pharmacy had 'long' been stealing its neighbor's lunch(that center has better vehicular access than the pleasant Grove Rite Aid ever did).OTOH,the Arden/Watt Safeway has had a pharmacy that 'long' has coexisted with a neighboring CVS for almost a quarter of a century(at least the closed Rite Aid at that intersection merely transferred its RX files to the Marconi location instead of selling them... mercifully).
For your life,Thrifty and Payless have got it.

I wonder if that rule varied by chain or by area?

For instance, we have a plaza that has a CVS (in the strip, has never moved or rebuilt to freestanding, even got remodeled a couple years back) that was originally Brooks and then Revco.

That plaza has a Hannaford (which is not attached, has a small gap between the existing strip and the supermarket building) that does not have a pharmacy.

However, a similarly aged Hannaford in another part of the area does have a pharmacy, and that plaza had a CVS when the Hannaford was opened (taken over from a toy store that had previously been a Grand Union, plus some smaller storefronts).

So, they are similar in age, one has pharmacy and one doesn't - maybe the difference in the existing pharmacy was the issue (as one was always CVS, while the other was not when the supermarket opened)?

Of the nearly three dozen California Payless Drug locations that Rite Aid offloaded to Longs Drugs fall 1999,another one quietly bit the dust this past spring(joining Orangevale and San Jose Leigh this closure round):The Moeser Lane center location in El Cerrito(10650 San Pablo, initially Value Giant before Payless NW acquired Payless Super Drug Stores of Oakland)only got a Longs transition remodel and never got the black and white decor. The Safeway next door(currently 24-Hour Fitness)was replaced by a newer store near El Cerrito Del Norte BART maybe a decade ago.
For your life,Thrifty and Payless have got it.

Another Downriver Michigan CVS store will close its doors: Ecorse/Monroe in Taylor will be closing on November 1st, with prescriptions transferred to the store at Van Born/Beech-Daly in Dearborn Heights. This will leave the Target pharmacy as the only CVS store in the entirety of Taylor, which is the most populated Downriver community.
