PCC Community Market To Close Downtown Seattle Store

Post by marshd1000 »

If COVID, riots, massive shoplifting, increases in crime, plus Amazon pulling out of Rainier Square hadn’t happened, I think PCC would not be closing this store! I feel that for much of the issues, local policies, including wanting to do the “Amazon Head Tax”, made Rainier Square no longer viable as a retail location. From what I understand, only 50% of office workers are back and that was one of the target markets for this store!

PCC makes some rather questionable decisions.

It is no secret downtown Seattle has issues, and maybe this wasn't the best located store even minus the current issues/issues since COVID, but I wonder how much of this is caused by the shortcomings of PCC when it comes to mix, price, excessive amount of spoilage since prices are too high, and their overall go to market strategy or lack thereof.

Also zero chance another grocer takes this spot.

The City of Bellevue should erect a statue in honor of Ksharma Sawant for her contributions to Bellevue's growth by driving businesses out of Seattle (most notably 20,000 Amazon tech jobs) with her socialist class warfare nonsense on the Seattle city council. If you're going to try to impose huge taxes on your biggest companies, it's probably not a good idea to have plenty of nearby space for them to move out of your jurisdiction.

That said, Rainier Square has always been a bit of an odd location, and I'm pretty sure this store was doomed as soon as Amazon decided not to occupy the property, but even with Amazon there I think they overestimate the willingness of the employees to shop at such an expensive store. I spent a few months working at Amazon back in 2012 in South Lake Union, and even though they had a really fancy employee cafeteria and several espresso stands on campus and a multitude of food trucks (mostly to make up for the relatively poor selection of food in the area at the time that wasn't overpriced hipster bait) it seems like the one that had the longest line by far was the taco truck in front of the Fiona building.
