Sobeys to enter US, will buy 750 divested stores from Kroger/Albertsons

Saw this news article:

Kroger and Albertsons have announced announced today that they have entered a definitive agreement with Canadian retailer Sobeys Inc. for the sale of select stores, banners, distribution centers, offices, replacing C&S as the buyer for divests.

The divestiture transaction includes around 750 stores, including all stores with the Albertsons, QFC, Mariano's and Carrs brand names. The transaction also includes 200+ stores with the Safeway, Vons, and Tom Thumb names, which will all be rebranded to the Albertsons nameplate under Sobeys’ control.
These stores will have their Kroger and Signature private labels replaced with Sobeys’ Compliments private label.

Why is Sobeys is buying Albertsons/Kroger divests? We all know what today is, right…?

Sobeys does have an office in Phoenix. I assume it deals with the purchase of produce.

This would be even worse than C&S... they closed so many Safeways and broke the union in many others by converting to franchise based FreshCo.

But the story would be better if they were getting full rights to Safeway banner and would convert all stores including all in Canada to Safeway.
