It is kind of confusing and not obvious how they chose places.

In this area, I saw one listing of a few stores that were transferring and also a few that would remain Rite Aid (no idea where they got the listings from).

At least one of the transferring stores was near a corner where all three (CVS, Rite Aid and Walgreens) already exist, while a couple on the remaining Rite Aid list were locations where Walgreens is not nearby. The transferring store is an older but freestanding location, while the non transferring two are one attached to a plaza and another that opened a new freestanding store in front of a plaza within the past couple months, so that doesn't have much bearing either, apparently.
Seems it would have been the other way around, leaving the one close to an existing store and taking over those not so close, but who knows what they were thinking.

Of course, this is in NY, where only about 1/2 the stores are going to Walgreens.

Do you think the Albertsons acquisition of the rest of Rite Aid might trigger DOJ to consider compelling Walgreens to give up certain redundant Rite Aids should Albertsons find them viable?

As of March 27, 2018, Rite Aid has completed the store transfer process, and all 1,932 stores and related assets have been transferred to WBA in exchange for cash proceeds of $4.157 billion. The transfer of the three distribution centers and related inventory is expected to begin after September 1, 2018.
