Hy-Vee is taking over another former Kmart building, this time in Freeport, Illinois; a 35 minute drive west of Rockford. This store would compete with a Cub (the only one left outside of Minnesota), Sullivan's Foods (AWG supplied independent) and a Walmart.
Schnucks has a near-monopoly in Rockford after buying Hilander from Kroger. This new store could be one step closer to entering Rockford.
No Jewel presence until you get to DeKalb/Sycamore, which are Chicago exurbs.

Re: Hy-Vee coming to Freeport IL
Is that a corporate Cub or a franchise Cub? Looks like a typical Cub- clean neat store, decent perishables, decent pricing. But nothing special about it that makes it stand out. Almost too boring.
If what I saw in MN is any indication, Hy Vee vs. Cub is a no contest. It is shockingly bad (for Cub).
Rockford are the Schnucks that are supplied by UNFI/Supervalu. Those stores seem a bit of out Schnucks normal marketing area and a couple of them are quite large (former Logli) while the Hilanders are all quite small (except Cherry Valley or something which was a very nice new build store by Kroger a few years before they pulled out of Hilander).
